What are you doing about your edges? What is helping to keep them smooth? I like a nice sleek bun … no tolerance for “frizzies” and the like. So far, I’ve been wearing a black fabric stretchheadband to cover my edges just in case. I do put something on my edges, but ...

But … is there a product that would help, so that I could skip the headbands sometimes.

What are you doing and using?

If I'm not mistaken, I think a lot of people use gels or Ecostyler. (Or is that a gel?) OK, I'ma tiptoe out before I hurt myself coz I don't know a lot of products. But I believe gels and a scarf can make your ballet bun look frizz-free perfect.

I use good old fashion Ampro brown gel if I'm in a rush. Otherwise, I use a conditioner or heavy oil (currently using Renpure Organics conditioner) to slick down my edges, brush and throw on a scarf for about 10-15 minutes and I'm good to go. It does frizz up a bit while I'm dancing because I sweat alot in my scalp. The only way it won't frizz is if I use the gel but I don't use that anymore since I'm on a no-poo regimen.

Ecostyler!?!? Thank you! ... let me look that up! I wonder what the ingredients are.

Now that I am far into my transition, gels don't work well for my edges when making a bun. I need something with less water content. And, I don't like using gel too much. What worked when I was relaxed, is starting to not work with my new texture.

I've been wondering about those so-called "pastes", but they look awfully heavy... like they may need to be washed out everynight :nono:

Questions ... does the Ampro ever get "crunchy" or flakey?Which heavy oil are you using?

That might be a good idea. There was a heavy cream that I was using and it's nice for 30 minutes, but I think the water content might be too high. But OMG … it smells so good… like icing on a creamy sweet cake :lick::look:

Thank you!

It used to get hard when I would just apply it over water. Now, I put my diluted conditioner on first (my leave in after washing) and then I try to apply a little bit of gel. Before, I would just glop it on because I thought I needed that much to hold, and it would get hard. Now, it doesn't get hard if I don't use too much but you kind of have to play around to see how much is enough to hold, but isn't too much to get hard. Have you tried the IC Fantasia Gel? I have some....I didn't like it because it didn't give ME the hold I needed and I had frizzies throughout the day...and I wasn't doing anything except walking around the mall....but alot of naturals and transitioners swear by this stuff so maybe you could try it? I could actually ship you mine if you would pay for shipping but idk if its just cheaper at the store.

I use castor oil or a blend of castor oil, shea butter, evoo, and coconut oil. But surprisingly, I think the best has been this Renpure conditioner that I hated as a conditioner but its really been providing me with the hold I need. But I usually apply more and brush it again after class is over to last me throughout the rest of the day.

Not transitioning but I am 8 months post. I have recently become a fan of Eco Styler gel. I slick my edges down with a soft boar brush and it stays all day without feeling gunky, hard or flaking. Good stuff

FYI: I found 2 winning combinations:
#1 Moisture Max Olive Oil Creme (whatever it's called) + Fruit of the Earth Rose Petal Aloe vera gel (mixed together) , and
#2 Kerastase Creme Oleo-Relax Slim + Fruit of the Earth Rose Petal Aloe vera gel (mixed together)
The Eco... gel did not work well for me :nono:

Anyone ever have this moment in a class:

someone complains about a slippery spot on the floor or someone falls and you wonder if that's where your head was while you were stretching :look: :nono:  I've since learned to use a t-shirt or a my shrug under my head while on the floor stretching ... I'm just waiting for some S.A. to say ... " that slippery spot smells like SOUL GLO and argan oil"
:lachen::lol::grin:

I use Black and Sassy Style Smoother for my edges. I moisturize my edges first and then apply the style smoother with my fingers. Once I do this my edges are smooth! The consistency is not wet like a gel, but it does contain mineral oil.

Ingredients: Purified Water, PEG 30 Castor Oil, Mineral Oil, Glycerine, Oleth 20 , Propylene Gylcol, Vinyl Caprolactam/PVP/Dimethylaminoethyl Methacrylate and others

After years of back to back braiding my edges just stuck up
I tried evoo con Eco styler on damp hair slicked back w Denman then boar bristle brush tied down w scarf for 10-15 min. Then I used a polyester satiny stretchy headband on the edges after taking the scarf off. I did that for months now I can slick it back w evco
Kccc or aloe vera gel using the scarf method still to set it but I really dont need the scarf most days I my hair is well moisturized. I also switched from misting w water to aloe vera juice gives a nice shine to the hair. Hth

Tancho wax stick.

I use it myself for performances and on all of my dancers. A lil goes a long way and the hair doesn't move if you sweat at the temples. Ecostyler is fine, but I found that it doesn't quite stand up to fouettes! Lol...

I use to slick my hair down on damp hair but one weekend I did the blow dry tension method and it didn't turn out like I expected my hair was still wavy so I took some ecostyler argan oil and mixed it with some Aloe butter and the clear ecostyler and slapped that on my head and my hair was slicked and frizz free for the 1st time ever while wearing my hair slicked back.. I also used a little of Elasta QP feels like silk styling gel.. Tied my hair down with a scarf.. Last pic in the Sigy is me attempting to blow drying using the tension method. I let my hair air dry a little 1st b4 doing it..That was right b4 I was about to do it..But it still looked the same maybe a little less wavy

Elasta QP Feels Like Silk Design Foam, then a little Aloe Vera gel + scarf works sooooooooo well for me. I'm 10 months into my transition.

I wet the brush and then smooth EcoStyler on with it. I always have wispy pieces around the hairline if I don't. I remember Dlewis saying she used Vaseline.
