I want to get braids but am feeling that my hair needs a lot of TLC right now. Would it make sense to wait instead? And focus instead on a lot of DC?

IF I were to go for mini twists, can I DC those?

Thanks!

It is up to you. Do a good deep conditioning session. Place you hair in a braided style. Remove them after 3-4 weeks, perform protein and heavy conditioning. it is summer. Do your thing.

I would agree with the deep conditioning and protein treatment and probably do a trim if needed and then go in braids for for a month or two

I don't want to be negative but just be careful as I have seen people hair become thinner after they removed the braids. It may have been from detangling issues. Personally I think wigs are a better protective style

I have thin hair and I find the weight of braids/twists causes breakage for me. You can try to DC them, but that may also cause them to "slip". I had a few of my twist extensions fall off a couple times lol.

Hm. Interesting. I can't do weaves because it is getting hotter and more humid, and my head sweats. I need to be able to wash. I've also never done weaves before.

I'm traveling in 3 weeks exactly, so I'm wondering if getting braids between now and then would be a waste given how soon the trip is. I would prefer to have my hair out for the trip (attending a very fancy wedding in a beautiful gown), but when I travel, my regimen and hair suffers.

I might have to leave the braids for when I return... Maybe focus on TLC (DC and protein) for the next 3 weeks, and then in 5 weeks get braids.

CarLiTa, Braids are phenomenal, especially in the summer time! I have worn multiple sets of braids since I've been natural and my hair as not thinned nor broken. If anything, I've had great retention and have a head full of healthy hair.

The key is not neglecting them. Your hair will be fine. Just do a good deep conditioning session before, moisturize your hair before you braid, spray a good leave in conditioner on them daily, wash them with diluted shampoo weekly, leave them in (if they are small box braids or any kind of box braids, up to 8 weeks), then take them out. Use a slippy conditioner and oil and detangle your hair BEFORE you wash them (your hair will mat if you don't), do a good protein DC, moisture DC, then style your hair or get another set (like I've been doing).

I looooove braids. I cannot do wigs because they are just too hot. I like my scalp to be able to breathe. With proper care, braids are great! Box braids are also better for your hairline than micros by the way. I have some in right now, and I love them.

I have similar feelings about my hair right now. I like to DC weekly and henna gloss and protein treatment biweekly. But I want to get braids as an easy summer style. I will in a few more weeks but lately, I have been wearing a high faux bun using Bijoux X-pression hair. This hair is super long bulk braid hair but its so soft, light and silky with a little texture. Not super straight like yaki though. It comes in a lot of nice, different colors and it matches my henna color and texture nicely.

The best part is...it takes all of 15 mins to do my hair each morning. Before the bun, I wore wigs but I think its too hot now. I like to have full access to my hair so I can pamper it on a reg basis.

This might be a good PS for you for the next few weeks. You can wear your hair out for your event and still put it back in the bun for the remainder of your trip. You can sleep in it or take it down at night.

I LOVE this HHJ!!

Could you please share pictures or is there a video I can look at for this? I have had a sew in weave on for 2 months now. I am too busy to constantly style my hair daily and I despair about finding an easy style without having to daily spend too much time. I was thinking about braiding but I don't have any time to sit down right now. So maybe your style might be a lifesaver for me.

ajoke
Here are a couple pics of how I do my bun

I connect the hair at the middle with an elastic band by looping it through.

The hair is really LONG!

Then I just put the loop over my ponytail. I use a scrunchie to make a ponytail bc my hair is fine and needs a little more bulk and stability.

Then I start wrapping one side of the hair around the base of my ponytail. Tuck and pin it and then wrap the other side in the opposite direction; tuck and pin. Add a few more pins and Im done.

I was considering this but I've done them before and they were just so heavy. I've seen thin Senegalese twists though that looked pretty light weight. Also I'm worried about trying to wash them as my hair is natural and will revert around them :( it'd be so nice to give my hair a break though
