i've noticed that a lot of ladies with type 2 and type 3 hair use relaxers. my hair is 3c and with enough heat i can get it relaxer straight. [humidity is a problem for me whether my hair is curly or straight] why relax?

I've often wondered the same thing!! If I had type 2 or 3 hair, I wouldn't touch a relaxer with a ten foot pole.

With my coarse, kinky hair, my hair would never get straight unless its with a hard press or a relaxer.

I have 3b/3c mixture and the reason why I relax (texturize) is to loosen the curls a bit. Curly hair may seem all "peaches & cream", but you'll start to hate life once those curls curl around each other.

I relax b/c I cannot and do not want to invest the time right now to blow dry and brush then press my hair into submission.

Time is the biggest factor for me. Otherwise, I'd def be natural.

Time and thickness are the reasons I texturize. My natural hair is very thick and I didn't wear my hair curly much when I was natural. I mostly wore it straight then.
I've been toying w/ the idea of transitioning again but I'm not sure if I want to do deal with the thickness I have when I'm natural.

I kind of agree, I'm 3b/3c and I have relaxed my hair twice in my life. But had I known what I know now - how extremely easy it is to make my hair super straight just from flat ironing - I would never have relaxed my hair back then. And I think it's kind of a rip off from the hair salons not to tell their clients that they could get just as straight hair with another method...you know, just explain the different options.
When my hair was relaxed I had to straighten it after washing for about 45 minutes with a blow dryer, I could just have spent that time with a flat iron instead.
Now I can have the best of 2 worlds, and since I've been natural 99,9% of my 33 years I don't really depend on the straight look. If I want my curls a little looser I just do a braid out. I don't mind the frizzies!

To be honest, If I had known how to better manage my hair back when it was natural (which was all through high school and some of college), I would have probably not relaxed. But I am happy with my hair as it is. With the help of this forum, I've learned many things about both natural and relaxed and if I ever do decide to go back natural, I feel well prepared.

I believe I am a 3b/3c and I was relaxed at age 12. "Back then" it seemed there was nothing else to do other than press and I HATED that b/c I was very tenderheaded. My mother struggled to tame my hair...(straight). Today, I am so glad that curls have become more accepted and that there are so many great products and techniques to get curly hair straight if that's what someone chooses to do. During all those years, I really never wanted to find out what was underneath that relaxer to know that I actually could straighten it without the relaxer.

And it's funny you mention this b/c now everytime I go to a hair salon, they tell me how they can straighten my hair without a relaxer (b/c I tell them i'm transitioning). I always wonder how come none of these same stylists said anything when I was getting touch-ups every 2 months.

Why relax? I relax my hair because it's super duper thick. Without a relaxer (and it's not even relaxed bone straight), my hair would be very unmanageable for me. Having my hair relaxed makes it much easier for me to manage.

I texturise about 3 times a year to make my life easier!!! It really helps with the thickness, my hair looks better appearance wise and responds better to products which I need to use a lot of. In the past I've said no more chemicals but I"ve never lasted more than 8 months

im 3c around my edges and and 3b in the crown i was relaxed as a child and i didnt realize had curls until rather recently. even with the relaxer i have to flat iron or use heat for a straight look ( i guess thats why i been transitioning). so in the end i i had been relaxing out of habbit

Crysdon-
Trust me, i know how irritating curly hair can be at times. I have naturally curly hair (3c), too. Check out Leejure's album. She is my hair twin. I appreciate your response though.

Aregee, we could be.

If your hair twin is Leejure, we hair. Our hair is rather similar and I had shrinkage like hers when I was natural.

funny for me to come accross this post because i am 3b/3c natural and i am seriously considering a relaxer but everyone is discouraging me. Please tell me how i can successfully straighten my hair without a relaxer and keep it healthy. I would really like to know. I'm not too good at flat ironing but maybe i just need a few tips to get the job done, so someone please help me out.

Plus, remember: those pics of 2's and 3's in the hairtype section are just guidelines. I am a 2c, therefore, my hair does NOT look like Ananda's. LOL

i'm transitioning. I got a relaxer because my mom couldn't handle it natural (she has osteoperosis (sp) ) my hair is like a mix between ananda's and kelis just 10x thicker lol

I chose to relax once I graduated high school because I wanted something different. I had been natural up until then, and I just grew tired of the wavy/curly hair. However, I'm now at a point in my life where I want my wavy/curly hair back, which is why I'm transitioning. I can't wait to have a full head of natural hair.

I used to relax my hair because up until a few years ago, curly hair wasn't accepted as it is today. Also, curly hair also has its share of problems too and I can see why many women choose to have it texturized or relaxed. When I did relax, it helped to controll the thickness and bulk of my hair. But apart from that, my natural hair is very easy to straighten or style and when I wear it in its natural staight, I get lots of frizz which can be controlled to some extent.

I know that chemicals may be just as bad, but I would rather relax my hair and have it straight everyday until time for a touch up than to have to straighten it every few days or so. It's just more convenient for me to have a relaxer. Sometimes I question myself as to why I have it though.

I do it because of the manageability and style chocies. I only wear my hair curly in warm weather and otherwuse I wear it straight. A relaxer alows me to have the best of both worlds by being able to do both looks with relative ease.
