Question about moisturizers

I have been reading a lot of very interesting things about keeping moisture(which has been a huge problem for me) in the hair. My question is  what is the difference between a water based moisturizer and an oil based moisturizer and could I get examples of each that have worked for any of you ?

Bumpity, bump, bump for responses! C'mon ladies, please fess up- so many of you have this hair conditioning thing down pat. Please share tips with those of us still trying to get the hang of it!!

I am driven to moisturize- its the only thing that my hair craves as it doesn't like protien. And living here in the desert of Arizona- trust me the air just zaps moisture right out of my hair!!

I'm no expert but I think the difference is that only water can moisturize. Oil can nourish and lubricate but only water can moisturizer. I try to use mostly water-based products for that reason (and because I too live in Arizona!) although most products I use have oil and water in them. Some of my favorites right now are S-curl which I dilute with a little distilled water, Carrot oil and a water based spritz called Dew from UBH (ultimate black haircare, another hair board).

I recently learned about Neutrogena Triple Moisturizer Silk Touch Leave-in(NTM) from Sylver2. She suggests using it on hair that is already dry rather than wet from washing and immediately tying on a scarf. It works very well and with water as the first ingredient, it's very moisturizing. :yep: This method is for relaxed hair.

Aveda Brilliant Humectant is supposed to be really good, especially for natural hair and it also has water as the first ingredient. Sally's carries a generic brand of this.

No offense, mrsv, but I think everyone is moistured out now. There have been about four threads on moisturizers and oil vs. water in the past week or so. Try searching the forum for the threads. If I come across any I'll bump them up for you.

Here's one.

Thanks guys, I think I'll try the S-curl 'cause I know I can find that. No offense taken MissBiss. I guess I did not look hard enough. I haven't been here very long, and I've been jumping around because there is so much good information. Sorry. By the way...what is bumping?

my hair loves S-Curl.

whether you need a water-based or oil-based moisturizer all depends on what your hair likes. you gotta experiment and do trial and error to see.

MsV, I think bumping puts a comment on your thread and boost the thread forward so that others see it in the more recent posts.

I too will have to check other threads for tips...duhh, I didn't think to do that earlier. Even though I've been a member here for a while, I'm still learning my way around- there's soooo much info on this site. And, best of all these women really do help out. I don't think I've seen any question ever go un answered or ignored- ever! That's what I love a group of helpful, knowledgable women!!!
