Question about Laying Down Edges

Yes, I believe it does and breakage. You should use natural edge control like Curls passion fruit edge control paste.

I think so too. And maybe receding hairlines? When I was transitioning I was pulling my hair back everyday and slicking the edges and the front. A couple months later my forehead looked a lot bigger for some reason. LOL I don't slick my edges that often anymore because I'm scared of this.

If you do it wrong - yes. Otherwise, I think not. Everyone is different so mileage my vary.

divachyk How does someone do it wrong? And how would you recommend doing it right?
Wrong by my standards is excessive brushing, slicking and using products that hardens, dries the hair out and/or breaks the hair. I tried a wax stick from Sally's years ago before my HHJ and could feel the hair snap.

I apply product that has a soft hold...apply with hands and gently smooth with my hands, place on a scarf to lay them down. Or, I use a soft toothbrush or baby brush followed by a scarf. I don't use boar bristle or other brushes. Knowing your edges and what it can withstand is key. vtoodler

I think it depends as well.

I agree also w/ hardening gels and harsh brushing. I use to use CURLS Control a Passion Fruit Paste for my edges... I brushed gently maybe 2x and tied down my edges. I had to do this every day... Now I use a spray mix and really only need to use my hands to smooth my edges and tie it down w/ a scarf.

Me personally because I have fine hair, I'd rather use my hands and a spray then brush everyday w/ a paste. But it doesn't hurt to have a gel backup for emergencies.

Why do people "lay their edges" down like this? I had never heard of this until recently, although I always wondered how some women achieved that fake, "molded plastic" look at the front of their heads like that. I would be completely bald at my edges if I was constantly putting gel or paste on them like that--my scalp is way too sensitive in those areas for that stuff. If you are natural, doesn't it look weird anyway, since the slicked back edges don't match the curly texture of the rest of your hair? I don't even brush my edges down when I pull my hair back. My little sister almost lost her hairline in the front and behind her ears trying to achieve that snatched look, and I wasn't about to traumatize my hairline like that to fake some baby hairs at my front. Either I have them or I don't, and I am quite content with my soft, fuzzy hairline, since it looks more natural to me. :ohwell:

I too think it depends. I stopped using brushes on my edges, even soft brushes since I noticed a little thinning on my edges. I don't use hard gels and only stick with soft stylers (gels, pomades, paste, etc). I use my fingers to slick.
