I have been for the past few roller sets. I am 6 months post and I want to make the transition back to natural, but i dont know. I wanted to wear my hair down and just somehow keep it straight, but now i dont know that i can do that. I rollerset monday and I can;t begin to tell you how much hair i lost. I had two very large knots come out in the back and I dont want to lose anymore hair. SO how are you ladies who are transitioning w/o a B/C wearing your hair?

I co-wash EVERYDAY and then wear my ends pinned up.
I'm 6 months post too... I haven't been loosing any hair
and for the past two weeks I've decided to try no to
comb my hair at all... I just co-wash... smooth the hairs
into a low pin up type styles and wear a scarf for 15 minutes
and then I'm good to go... it's been working out very well for me.

I usually let it air dry after I wash and condition and then flat iron it. This is what I did when I was relaxed so, no change there. I just wrap it and as long as it doesn't get wet it stays very straight. (Roller setting always made my hair crunchy and it's definitely a no-no for me now that I am 11 months+ into my transition).

If I don't have time to straighten it then I just wear it in a bun and the waves and curls look really nice. I've even had a few people tell me how nice my hair looks when it's in a bun, that made my day.

The key for me was finding the right products for my hair. I couldn't keep using the exact products I used when I was relaxed because my new growth would act up if I didn't use a heavier conditioner and a little more oil than I was used to.

*Note: Amla oil is a banger - you may want to make your way to your local Indian grocer if this is not already in your stash. Also, Aveda Universal Styling Creme is great for straight looks and avocado butter is great if you're not wearing it straight.

This is great info....Ive decided 2 transition as well without the BC, so I am interested in the responses. I keeo hearing about avocado butter so I am adding that to my list.

As I shared in another thread, I transitioned in braids, trimming about a 1/4 inch whenever I touched up a braid (as I wore them straight for a year). All my relaxed hair was gone by the end of that year. It was a very smooth transition.

I wore braidouts 24/7 and only delt with my hair on a weekly basis to wash/condition and braid it up. The denman brush really helps for keeping the tangles out and blending the two textures. I would also recommend a spray bottle filled with water to use whenever you comb your hair, a good conditioner and a k cutter comb.

Yep, that's the key for me as well. I'm still undecided (cuz I really dont know how I'm going to wear my hair most often) but I'm at 7mos. (slowly cutting off the perm/especially the lye perm) and the two textures are a breeze to manipulate. I loose less hair now than I lost washing w/a perm. Go figure!

On a daily I wear in a pony or bun. I air dry & flat iron on special occassions. So far, I can only wear my hair straight for like 4 days (provided it's not humid and I'm not sweating in my head) cuz after that the ends need some type of water or they will snap when I comb or brush.

This is what I'm doing. I wear braidouts all the time and only mess with it for washing and moisturizing. I use Sta-Sof-Fro and avocado butter on my new growth.

I don't have a denman or k cutter comb unfortunately...where can I get these?

You can get a denman (d3) at Sally's or Trade Secret. I bought my K cutter online.

1st 3 months of transition I was wearing rollersets
Nxt 2 months I was into falls
Nxt 2 months I was wearing a phony pony
The past month I've been wearing comb coils, twists, bantu knot sets, and once roller-setting incident which did not produce the results I wanted

I've been mini-chopping along the way.

I wasn't consistent with deep conditioning for the first 5 months or so, but since I've hopped on that bandwagon, things are looking so much better.

Edited: This is how I'm wearing my hair now. I do comb coils with lacio lacio, silicon mix, lock & twist gel, dry it under hood dryer and then seperate with my fingers. It's a keeper for now.

I do mostly twistouts, braidouts and airdried ponytails right now. Every once in a while I plan on going to my stylist for a blowout.

I did this too. I do braids for about 2 months and then when I take my braids out I trim my ends and wear buns until I get the braids back in (usually a month or so between braidings). I would always trim away permed ends right before getting fresh braids too. Slowing taking off the perm worked for me. I did not have any major breakage or shedding either because I kept my hair moisturized and washed/conditioned alot. Good luck!

bumping for more replies.

I am trying to transition once more and I am scared of potential styling nightmares and breakage.:perplexed

I have been transitioning for 10 months. At first, I was able to wear roller-sets, then I went to Falls, Phony Ponies, and now I alternate between single strand twists, coils, two strand twists, and a phony pony once in awhile. I pre-poo, shampoo, and deep condition my hair once a week. I co-wash once or twice a week to re-do my twists or coils, and I don't comb it except for wash days. I don't have a problem detangling despite not combing it..don't really know why, b/c the last time I transitioned my hair gave me the blues soooo bad.

I sleep w/ a silk or satin bonnet and on a satin pillowcase b/c my bonnet always slips off.

I tried rollersets 8 and 9 months into my transition, and they looked good, but I was stressing about heat, even indirect heat from a soft bonnet dyer.
