What is the purpose of pre shampoo treatments if you are going to shampoo it out anyway?
Yesterday I did a hot oil treatment and spent so much time trying to shampoo the oil out that my hair was left all rough and tangled..

My hot oil treatments leave my hair feeling softer. I use conditioner to "wash" the oil out and it hasn't been a problem for me. I use liquid shea butter/shea oil. In fact, I'm getting ready to do that now. I don't really want to wash it completely out though. Many years ago, I used olive oil and experienced what you you're saying. It was always a pain to get it out and my hair felt very dry afterwards. I've used olive oil recently and I did not have the same problem that I had washing it out like I did years ago. I have no idea why.

I think you used too much oil. That happened to me once. My hair is very porous so I put on a lot of oil one time thinking more is better and I had a hell of a time washing the oil out of my hair. The oil left a white film on my hair.
