I recently moved to Micronesia and was amazed at the heads of hair out here. Majority of the women have long, thick, luscious hair (most have hair to their waist, some much longer, I have only see a handful of short haired ladies in the last 2 months).

Being the hair junkie that I am, I asked what the 'secret' was, and the response? Coconut oil!

I have never really liked coconut oil. I tried Vatika but didn't really see the wonders it was supposed to perform, and I have tried other brands with similar outcomes.

Despite my prejudices, I have decided to dedicate my year here to trying this pure oil. I purchase the coconuts, take it to a friends wife, who grates and boils it down for me. I apply the oil and will see how my hair likes it. For the sake of the 'experiment' I have eliminated all other growth aids, vitamins etc. I even stopped DCing and am using VO5 normal 2in1 (I usually hate 2 in 1's and I am a steam/dc queen so this is a BIG step).

My SO has locs so I plan on having him use it too (He will start in March) and trying to get a few other friends to use it too.

I am uploading a starting pic (I got a cut in November so this marks my starting point). Mind you, I don't plan on doing another length check until November 2012.

The oil is relatively cheap and VERY accessible, so if I fall in love, I can afford the new addiction!

Coconut oil is all I use these days. I don't have access to the fresh cooked stuff like you but I only use food grade. I'm sure you'll be very happy with the results. You're doing the right thing by minimizing your other products to let the coconut oil work it's magic coz things work differently on strands that are coated with silicone and waxes, etc. Be sure to get instructions on exactly how to apply the oil and how much to use, etc. A lot of the complaints I see e.g. on this board about oils not working are because people aren't using them the right way.

This is OT but I'm so amazed by all the different parts of the world LHCFers can be found. I need to find a career or something where I can go live in far off lands for a year or so.

OP are you going to eliminate deep conditioning? Please don't. Our hair is dry and definitely needs it. I recommend that you add some of that coconut oil to your favorite DC instead.

Wow I've never tried homemade coconut oil. I'd love to see the process. I love coconuts and would end up eating them all up.

I do plan on eliminating DC'ing. I am sticking to the process the girls out here use. Since I am a recovering PJ, I figure it is best to keep it simple. So far, my hair is doing very well. It is actually softer and more manageable than when I was using commercial DC's.

As for coconuts? The particular ones used for hair/skin oil? You wouldn't eat them! I promise!

I'm a little concerned with you totally changing your reggie based on the locals.

I say this because in that area there are mainly pacific islander based ethnic backgrounds whose hair differs from ours.

I'm currently in India and while I'm surrounded by the long haired women here, I can not do their reggie because my hair type is totally different from theirs. My hair requires WAY more work than theirs.

On the other note I am a big fan of CO. I just think (like others have said) you should consider incorporating the CO to your reggie that works for you rather than changing it all together.

Mz.MoMo5235,
I appreciate your concern and actually agree with you! Regimens have to be specific to the need of the particular individual. Some people can get away with certain routines that would render me bald in days! Rest assured, I would not base my decision on a head of hair that greatly differs from mine.

Having spent half my life in the Pacific, I have been exposed to the simplistic approach to hair care for a while. I personally don't care for the smell of most tropical fruits, and coconut oil is close to the top of the smells I don't like. With that being said, the Micronesians and Melanesians both use the same coconut oil process. While my hair is not like the Micronesians (mine defies gravity in most places, while theirs does not), the Melanesians have hair very similar to mine (although some are much coarser). Again the specific descent of the Melanesian people is not known, but some of them have hair which would comfortably fit into the 4b category. I have observed the methods used, and am simplifying my routine based on that. Don't worry, if I start to spot issues, I will immediately rush an order of commercial products out to the rescue!

I usually keep my hair in protective styles and so my routine now isn't too far off! My hair is not fond of most shampoo's so using a 2in1 is slightly more tolerable! Don't worry, I am not big on major setbacks so I will keep a close eye on how things are looking and keep you updated!

Yup. I make my own coconut oil whenever I spend summers in the Caribbean. It's a long process (the entire day) but the reward is worth it. The stuff from the store doesn't smell or work like mines.

Glad to hear that this is not a rush decision :)

Keep us updated =D

Any updates? I would love to try the oil from there, sounds interesting.

That sounds totally doable. I only use coconut oil on my hair. No shampoo, or conditioner. I'm experimenting with using my own sebum and small applications of coconut oil. Two things, I find that coconut oil works best for me on damp/wet hair and I only need a tiny bit. Good luck with your experiment.:yep:

@ kinkycurlygurl I HAVE noticed that I need significantly less on wet hair!! It's amazing!
How is your hair doing? How long have you been on the 'coconut oil' journey?
