I got advice not to let air pass through my hair. Can I just coat my hair with oil.

Air cannot pass through my hair that way?

Is this about right?

I have never heard of this. Does this apply to especially windy days?

I thought protective styling were those styles where it limits the amount that you manipulate your hair - no coming, fingering, brushing etc needed once the hair is "protectively" styled.

I don't see how or why air passing through your hair would be bad - wind, maybe...only because it can cause tangles which would then require brushing and combing.

As far as grease goes, I have mixed feelings about it. Most greases contain "petrolatum" (petroleum...oil) that clogs the scalp's pores, and can withstand washings, which causes buildup. I would recommend using hair oils (the ladies around here recommend some great oils) followed by a moisturizer to lock in the oil.

Ohhhhh, maybe she's talking about the "Cold" winter air? which can be harmful to some if they wear their hair out all the time. Is this what your talking about Plenty???

I would hope that that's what she's talking about Beautiful.
COs that doesnt make any sense. Then she'd have to wear a shower cap all day everyday..

Protective styles are about protecting your ends from dryness, little or no manipulation and allowing your hair to rest up. Like the baggie, or wear phony tails and stuff with a baggie on.
