What are some examples of protective hairstyles? Does it mean your ends absolutely can't be exposed to the wind?

When I think of protective styles - I think of updos, buns, french twist, braids, flat twist, styles were your hair isn't being manipulated alot and where your ends are protected.

Ladies, any others??

For me it is anything that keeps your ends tucked in. Buns, french rolls, etc. I dont even like braids unless they are pinned under some how. There was someone here who posted something from a lady named Yvette. She said that for a whole year, she kept her ends completely protected wearing buns every day and her hair grew to waist length. I was truly inspired and decided to do the same thing. Shiiiit, I will create protective styles if i have to, cause I am not wearing my hair down for the next 11 mos.

According to Wanakee, which was the first time I ever heard of the concept, a protective hairstyle should keep your ends safely tucked away from air exposure.

Dallia. I am there with you. I told myself that I was going to wear my hair up all summer no matter what, and so far so good. Actually when I get my hair done and I wear it down that day the whole time I'm kind of worrying about my ends and what's going on back there. It's actually kind of a relief to put it up.

I like diamond bobby pins and trying different parts. Also, besides being boring, I like that I don;t have to worry about my hair when it's up. I know what it looks like. When it's down I always have to check to make sure it's not getting 'angry'.

I use those diamond pins too, but I am very careful because those tips can rip out your hair. Im still searching and thinking of ways to make these styles suit me and my face but truthfully, it's not that big of a deal to me. Actually, Im what you call a plain jane... I dont really need a bunch of fancy hairstyles, I am quite capable of wearing a bun for an entire year. I look for other ways to spruce up my look if I feel to. Over all, I need to see if this can be done. I need to know if my hair will grow that long, so I am willing to do what ever it takes to get it there even if it means boring buns for 365 days. Many of these women say it can be done. When I wash my hair and feel it against my back (brastrap length) and it's hasnt been touched up since May, I get so happy and encouraged, I cant stop now cause bra strap aint long enough for me, I am bored with it. My hair has NEVER went past the brastrap, now that I am more knowledgable, hopefully this will change. Sorry for being longwinded but Im hyped right now.

how long doe it generally take to airdry? Won't we catch something going outside with wet hair (especially in winter)?

My hair never completely dries, the part of my hair that is closest to my scalp dries, but the hair in my bun or french roll usually stays damp. I was worried about this and took it to the board because I thought it would cause overall weakness. Then many of the ladies had said that their hair usually stays damp as well and they had not had any adverse affects. You can let it air dry to some extent before putting it up. Im thinking that I will do this on a daily basis throughout the summer because it's still pretty much hot/warm. I havent decided how I will be doing it for the winter, but believe me I will figure it out...I may tone down on the rinsings, etc, but I wont stop.

I solved that problem last winter by doing my hair at night. It's still damp in the morniong but not as bad as going out with completley wet hair (brrrr!)
