me too!!! I'm waiting on responses as well- this bun is driving me nuts and breaking my hair in places.

Some would suggest braids, braid-outs, twists, twist-outs.
Are there more?

How about a pretty french twist with a couple tendrils in the front?

A bun isn't the ONLY protective style. It is just one of many. Do a search on protective styles. I remember a while back someone listed a bunch of them

I tire of the bun quickly, too.

I mostly do braidouts and wear them in a ponytail or a pinup or a ponytail halfdo.

I hate buns!! I hate the tension it places on my hair and I dont like real coiffed, tight styles. I do a realy loose french roll with only a few pins so it doesnt look real tight and PLANNED. If i want to take it down it will have nice soft waves.

I found these from a while back. Karonica was nice enough to make this list of protective styles:
1. bun
2. curly pinup
3. french roll
4. cornrows
5. braids
6. flexi-rod set (because no combing is involved and can last for days)
7. phonypony
8. twist-out (because no combing is involved and can last for days)
9. strawset (because no combing is involved and can last for days)
10. flat-twists
11. gel/comb twists
12. twists
13. any kind of pin-up that isn't done tight
14. bantu-knots
15. weave (done properly)
16. wig
17. instant weave
18. headwraps
19. silk/satin scarves
20. braid-out

oooohhhh ahhhhh i am being soothed by the list that you posted Nay. hopefully one of the methods will fit me. thanks so much. i thought i was going crazy with this bun but i am always open to more protective styles.

To avoid breakage from a bun I also wear two braids, or one braid down my back. When I wear the one braid I don't make a ponytail first and then braid. I just braid and then secure only once at the end of the braid.
