Protecting ENDS while relaxing

I still go to the salon to get my hair relaxed and I'm due for one soon. I've made so much progress keeping my ends healthy the last 10 weeks that I don't want anything to ruin that. My stylist always bases the scalp but she never puts anything on the relaxed part including the ends. So my question is:

>How can I protect my ends (as well as the rest of my relaxed hair) from the harsh chemicals of the relaxer when she's washing it out? Are there any products I can put on at home b4 i go to the salon?

Hi, Poochie!

I'm not real sure; I make sure that I have something moisturizing on my hair in general, though.

Hopefully some other salon-goers will chime in. Sorry I couldn't help.

BTW, using Jamaican Black Castor oil has saved my ends from needing to be cut (the last relaxer - 8/25/07) to just needing to be dusted (current relaxer - 11/14/07).

BUMP!!

I texlax at home. To protect my hair during a touchup, I apply oil to my previously-texlaxed ends before application.

I too use oil on my previously relaxed hair and ends to protect it. I use a lot and for me it's like a pre-poo for my hair while I'm relaxing the newgrowth. :)

ETA: Just want to add that doing this made a big difference in retaining my length. Years ago, I did not do this and my length and ends were always overprocessed, resulting in breakage. In my experience, rinsing out the relaxer on unprotected, previously relaxed hair time after time is not a good thing.

I always apply a leave-in conditioner and oil my relaxed hair. I use Silicon Mix leave-in and apply an oil (usually olive oil) afterwards.

I put some kind of conditioner and oil on my previous relaxed hair before I relax the new growth. It's works great.

What about plain ol vaseline? Petroleum jelly? I base my hairline, ears and nape with it, so I was thinking it would be good for my ends too.

Whatever you use to base your scalp should also be fine for your ends...just be sure not to get any on the new growth.
