I'm reading a few posts and I notice that several ladies are doing some sort of treatment before shampooing. What do you use and what are the benefits?

I use ORS Hair Mayo mixed with an egg and honey. It's my protein treatment, and it makes my scalp feel fantastic. And my hair feels so strong afterwards. It's great :)

I usually use some type of oil before I shampoo -- coconut oil or olive oil or castor oil mixed with jojoba. I also use some commercial products -- CurlFriends Replenish which is a protein-based creamy treatment or Lazartigue Pre-Shampoo Cream with Shea Butter.

The benefits for my hair are that it is easier to detangle, feels softer and is more moisturized than when it is when I skip the pre-poo step. I am not sure why this is, but I read somewhere that coconut oil before shampoo helped to reduce friction when washing and also helped to prevent protein loss caused by shampoo.

Pre-pooing for me is great. I get less breakage while shampooing and my hair is more moisturized and not stripped by the shampoo. I've gotten the best results pre-pooing w/ shea butter and wgo. I baggy it over night and shampoo the next day.

I use The Body Shop Brazil Nut Moisture Mask. It is a excellent  pre poo. It leaves my hair with shine, moisture, strength and less breakage than I ever had. This is my staple product for my pre poos.

I use an oil and sometimes I use Aveda Sap Moss Concentrate.

For me, pre-pooing helps to protect the structure of the hair shaft, aids in moisture retention, makes my hair soft, gives my hair a nice shine and helps to detangle my hair a little before shampooing.

I use the OJON restorative treatment or Brazil Nut Moisture Mask

I get less breakage & my hair retains moisture better (longer)

I never used to pre poo, until I joined lhcf. I usually use a cheapie con, but last night I made a hot oil treatment (coconut & grapeseed oils) and it worked out pretty well. My hair seems to thrive from the extra moisture I've added to my regimine.

For those of you who clarify...at what step would you pre-poo? Before or after you clarify?

Pre poo before applying any type poo to the hair. After you clarify do a good DC.

I saturate my hair with coconut oil before shampooing. I keeps my hair from getting stripped and dry.

I use Dabur oil amla as a pre-poo treatment its very soothing on the scalp, its softens and silkens my hair and allows my conditioners to penetrate better. i tried using conditioner as a pre-poo and i hated it my hair was horrible and hard afterwards.

I do sometimes. I only do it under 2 conditions - I need protein but I don't have much time. I will do a light protein deep condition on dry hair before I shampoo and do a rinse condition. Otherwise I don't bother with the extra step of prepooing. It is just one step I would rather skip if I can.

I did pre-poo a few times but no longer do so... nothing beneficial came from it that I can't get from just daily moisturizing... IMO.
My hair is already moisturized daily before I shampoo it and that keeps it soft before my first shampoo. So basically my regimine is to just to
shampoo and deep condition and maintain daily moisturizing and that works great for me.

Same here. I think Pre-pooing would have helped me when I used to have problems with dryness and things. Now, It really does not help me.

i do it because it makes my hair very soft.. I use AphoGee Keratin Conditioner with the regular conditioner and olive oil mixed in.. mmm yummy

I just started pre-pooing about 3 weeks ago. I mix amla oil with coconut oil, and let it sit on my hair for a couple of hours before shampooing. I've noticed a huge difference in how soft my hair is and there is less shedding in the shower after doing this. After those first 2 tries, I decided to keep it up and made a pre-poo of perpermint eo, amla oil. coconut oil, rosemary eo, silk amino acids, rose water, almond and apricot oil. I mix them in a small spray bottle and saturate my hair then let it sit for a couple of hours. My hair felt so nice last week when I did this that I didn't even bother to shampoo. I just rinsed and conditioned.

Great info ladies!! Thanks a lot. I'll have to pick up some oil. I only have the kemi oyl and the nexxus botanoil. Where can I get the coconut oil.... etc?

yep I agree... if the hair is dried out and brittle then I'd say pre-poo but now just by daily moisturizing I don't see the need to do a pre-poo and like u said... I want to save steps!!

I was using unrefined coconut oil I found in the grocery store, I stopped because it was making my hair smell. I just started using Vatika oil that I got from the Indian grocery. You can find all kinds of good oils at your local market (coconut, evoo, grapeseed) or the alma or vatika at the Indian stores. :)

I just got my Vatika Oil and used it last night as a prepoo. I appled it my scalp and rubbed some down the length of my hair. I then put on a plastic cap, tied down my hair with my scarf a nd went to sleep. I went to the Dominicans today and when they were detangling using their rinse my NG was super soft and I'm 7weeks post! I was waiting to hear the "you need a touchup" spiel and it never came. I will definitely use this as a prepoo again.

I use a cheapie conditioner, and my hair is easier to detangle and retains more moisture when I prepoo. Also, the prepoo acts as a kind of barrier between the hair and the sulfates in the poo.

If you clarify before you pre-poo, won't the moisture/benefits of the pre-poo just get washed away?

Sounds like a double negative huh? Clarifying does strip the hair of buildup and such, but IMO the pre poo penetrates the strands and sort of gives them a lil protection from the harshness of the clarifying poo. Just my two cents tho...:look:

Per the Hair Recipe Forum,(http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=68944) started by Goldensugar23, I use this one, and have liked the way it has tamed new growth; I recently added some ORS Hair Mayo, extra virgin coconut oil, and some LeKair Cholestoral Plus to the formula.

I use this b4 i wash and leave it in up to overnight depending on much i need it.

half can of coconut milk(thicker the better)
2 large tablespoons of olive oil
1 large of jojoba oil
2 good squirts of your favorite conditioner (cheap conditioner like Mane & Tail)
1 1/2 tablespoons real honey

beat it with a fork.

zap it in the micro for 20 seconds until warm enough so it wont burn you.

wrap in saran wrap or plastic cap and rinse out from 1 hour to overnight depending on your damage.

I usually leave mine on for about an hour and half; HTH!

I usually don't pre poo, but I think I'll try it to use up some of my extra conditioner from my PJ days... ok like, last week, but that's not important :sekret:
