Praying Hands Method of Detangling

Can we discuss?

I read about a poster doing this in another thread and unfortunately I don't remember the poster or the thread:nono:

I've tried it a few times and it seems to work quite well. Basically, you load up the hair with conditioner, and then work your hands up and down the hair shaft with your hands clasped as you would in prayer.

Like I said, I tried it the other day and it detangled quite well. Im curious to know if others have tried it and any long term benefits noticed.

Yea that technique never worked for me. It doesn't penetrate to the middle of the hair section and so I would have to do smaller sections than normal and it would take forever. It didn't seem to help with detangling either as it just smushed the curls together.. I do the rake and smooth method as if I was shingling my hair and that works pretty well for me.

I tried it after watching a Naptural85 video and I don't think that my hair is long enough to make this work.

I did catch loose hair, but I didn't get all of the shed hair because after passing my hair through my hands, it would curl back up, and I'd have to finger comb it out to do the praying hands again - it was tedious.

When I run water over the section and finger comb, I do a much better job of detangling.

That method isn't the best for me and I exclusively finger detangle. I use the gentle wish bone method or taking out a braid method of finger detangling because it separates the hair which makes it easier for the shed hair to be released.

Although I've never done it while detangling, I always use this method (wasn't aware that it had a name) to cleanse and apply product to my hair.

I've never heard of this method. I initially thought it meant praying and hoping for the best. After reading the thread I still can't mentally see how this method works.

This is primarily what I do and it works well for me. I tend to do it more on dry hair, oiled hair or damp hair. I also do it under running water. I do my hair in 8 sections so I just do it for each section.

faithVA can you give me more details on this. Im interested in it because I've read that it's a great way to preserve your natural hair pattern. Im experimenting with staying away from the comb for a while but my trade off would be that I have to co-wash a lot more often. What are your thoughts? Especially when you mention doing it under running water...I would like to try that so I can do more wash and go's; my hair is begging for more moisture but at this awkward length phase I'm not sure how to style my hair after a wash and go.

I'm not really sure how to explain this because it is something I do by default. I am trying to imagine myself doing this. I would have to say I do this more on dry hair because my hair is only EL right now so it is easier to do it on dry, damp or oiled hair. I put my hair into 8 sections and clamp them off. I then
take each section and start at the bottom and work my way up to the roots.

But what also do is hold the section with one hand and grab the section at the roots with the other hand and slide my hand down the hair.

While under water, I usually take a section and split it or part it off with my hand and grab the section at the roots and slide my hand down the hair.

This works better for me now instead of finger combing because my hair is short and really coily and my ends tend to tangle.

But I also don't wear a WNG. So this may not be feasible for you.

My shed hairs tend to come out easily and slide towards the bottom.

Thanks girl, yea, im gonna experiment and find the technique that works for me, but I just want to get a.general idea. Thanks for breaking it down. :-) I want to worry less about wanting curls and just learn to work with mu hair so im trying a variety of different.methods until I find something that works for my in between legnth hair.

RUBY Smiley79, EnExitStageLeft gave a nice visual in one of her blog posts. Literally imagine a section of hair between your hands in a praying pose, and you smooth from top to bottom repeatedly as much as needed

I don't use this method for detangling, but for me its great for making sure all the hair is coated with oil or conditioner. Some shed hairs do come out but for a thorough detangling? Not happening for me

I remember Kimmaytube mentioning this method for smoothing your hair after applying your leave in. I didn't know this was a method for detangling.

Co-signing, I finger detangle only and use this method for applying conditioner/oil. I only use a comb when I need to change my part or when my hair is straight. It's been working for me for a couple years now. I can understand why it might not work for some though.

Thanks for the blog love :hug2:. As for the prayer hand method, I don't think it necessarily for detangling, but its bomb.com for removing sheds. I do it almost every day to reomove the sheds that get caught in the ends of my strands. I'm a heavy shedder, so this technique is a saving grace (pun intended lol).

I really want to give the finger detangle method a try once more...I gave up after a few days, lol. But I liked the idea of preserving the little hair pattern that I have and not manipulating it with a denman brush or comb. I'll try again and see how it works.
