I currently have interlocks(cornrows) in the back and individual braids in the front part (I used loose..3a/b type hair). I'm doing braids again at the end of Decmember. I wear it anywhere from 8 to 16 weeks. By the time I take these cornrows out it would have been in for 15 weeks...the front braids I had to redo..they only lasted for 6 weeks. I have been growing out my hair since Nov 20th, 1999.
Your hair is coming along nicely. Do you find it harder to keep individual braids now that your hair is natural? I am asking, because I have only had my braids for 5 weeks and not only are my braids hanging on for dear life, but because it is natural (somewhat) on the ends it is peeking through the braids looking freezy. What do you do to tame the freeziness? Or do you have these problems? I wanted to keep the braids until January, but with the way they are looking I might have to get the outer edges redone or take them all out. Maybe I should PM you this.
I checked out your album. I like the hair you used in the crochet pics. It looks like the one I have now. Is it human hair? The one I have is called "binding twist", it's synthetic and looks like this (like 3b/c):
Anywho, What I do is not to wash too often..every 2-3 weeks or so. And I redo them myself so when I see them looking "rough" I get to work...usually around the 6-8 week mark I redo the front hairline.
To avoid this problem I started doing the kind where you leave the ends out so everything just blends in..
I also learned how to do a different kind of braids because my hair got so long and I was braiding it so far down that you couldn't see the curls or color on the ends of the synthetic hair. You start the braid but right away(on the 1st "rotation") you take out like 75% of what you're braiding and leave that out of the braid but continue braiding with the other 25%...the end result is your hair looks like you only braided it about 1/2 an inch and left the rest loose...you don't see scalp or anything else....I'll take pics of it in December for you to see what I mean. HTH!
Faith, yOur hair loOks real nice...
My hair used tO be the same length but I recently cut off tha damaged ends and I am thinking about keeping my hair braided in individuals to grow it out.
Well I was talking to my best friend who is natural and she suggested that I use a wavy textured hair to do individual braids as I thought. And to wrap my hair more often than I would with a relaxer, because the hair will look like peach fuzz as mine does. The crochet braids are done with hair similar to the hair you posted. I would use that type of hair, most likely. I would like to see your braid pics when posted. I don't know whether to pay $30 to get the edges of my hair redone or to just do some crochet braids or wear a wig for the next month or so. I really don't want them to braid my edges because they pull so tight sometimes.
Oh by the way I used straight hair for my braids and I think that is part of the problem aside from the hair hanging from by the thread, but I do appreciate the growth.
wow, what a great accomplishment....especially growing natural hair, that takes a really delicate hand..waist length is knocking at your door..my hair seems to be growing quick as well...i think it is the scalp massages, or maybe the suppliments.i dunno wich but ima keep it up...
Ciara:
my braids regimen is very simple. I wash my hair every 2 or more weeks(don't follow this example..wash yours 2-4x a month
)with whatever watered down shampoo I have because I'm trying to use up all my old stuff.
I then spray with scurl (the one in the grey and blue bottle) when it's almost dry...I spray 1-2x/week.
Then I oil it..I'm trying to use up all the old oil I have right now..you can use kemi oyl, keracare essential oil, WGO oil (if you don't mind the smell
), Hot six oil, etc...I oil 1-2x/week
And that's it. Very simple and easy to do. HTH

it's funny cause what has held me back from reaching waist length this November is a not so delicate hand. I trimmed about 3" off this year and I have had my hair ripped through with a small tooth comb. All in all this year hasn't been gentle on my hair at all. I'm going to strive to do better by my hair next year. Hey! There you go I have a New Year's resolution. First one I've made in years
well dang faith, if u didnt use a delicate hand with this length can u imagine what length's u can achieve with it????? that is great! u must have strong hair!!
