Amla is a product (can be an oil or powder) and it is part of an Ayurvedic regimen.

Here's an example: http://ayurnaturalbeauty.ecrater.com/index.php is a website dedicated to the sale of ayurvedic herbal remedies. I use Amla for hair growth, shikakai bars to wash my hair, henna to color my hair, etc...

I hope that helps! And its not a dumb question BTW I was confused too in the beginning.

Ayurveda is a technique of using powders on your hair, if I'm not mistaken. I think Alma oil may be a part of that but I'm not 100% certain. Hopefully some of the others will chime in cause I wanna learn more about ayurveda myself.

Ayurveda actually is more than just natural hair care but rather a complete system of health and natural remedies originally from India and includes Yoga, massage, use of herbs, and practising healthy habits, etc. Even the urine therapy discussed on the skin forum (aka Amaroli) is part of Ayurveda.
