I've noticed that a lot of ladies on here seem to be able to wear ponytails costantly w/o experiencing breakage. How do you do it?

One way to wear constant ponytails with little or no breakage is to place the ponytail in a different location on your head from time to time. I've also heard of some ladies soaking their ponytail holders in olive oil before putting it in the hair.

I usually soak my bands in olive oil. I have heard that the satin/silk scrunchies are better for your hair. Since I started soaking the bands in olive oil I haven't noticed any breakage.

Balisi's right...
Also, don't make it so tight that your eyes look like you're squinting (even when you're not)
Keep your hair moist, give it plenty of eleaticity, & give it a break when you're not going anywhere...

I wear ponytails M-F; Sat & Sun I'll wear my hair down/loose.

I agree with the other ladies
- I use only satin scrunchies. They're WONDERFUL!!!
- I'll change the position of the ponytail weekly.
- My hair is usually wet (not dripping) before I make the ponytail... either due to a conditioner wash or spraying with moisturizer.
- To keep my ends from breaking, I'll braid or twist the ends... sometimes forming a bun or simply pinning up the ends.
- Also, I don't make the ponytail tight at all... :nono:

I've been wearing them off & on throughout my transition & now that I'm natural. So far, I haven't had any problems.

Ditto to everything she said!!

I keep my bun very loose so I don't pull on my edges.

I wear a chignon so I put that on my hair first and scrunci after (to hold it in place) so I am not pulling on my hair.

Pardon my ignorance, I thought a chignon was a style.....what are you putting on your hair..is it a certain type of clip or something.

I "think" that a chignon is a perfectly donut shaped bun.

I wear buns 99% of the time and usually its low on my head, I dont change the postion of it much, I think that the silky mini scrunchies I use help as far as having no breakage!

Well, this is what I do.

Keep your hair moist especially around the edges

Don't wear the ponytail too tight

Don't use those hairbands with the golden join as they break your hair, cut up an old pair of black pantyhose/stockings/tights straight across into small bands and use them to make little hair bands. No breakage guaranteed.

Clip up your hair to save and protect the ends after you've lightly greased or oiled them.

I almost exclusively use Scunchi's hair hosiery to do my ponytails. I never pull them too tight. I have never experienced any damage around my edges from ponytails nor have I had any problem around the ponytail area, either. I use just enough tension to get the ponytail smooth.

Last question, Does anyone wear their ponytail without taking it down for a few days? for example wearing it for 3 days straight. Is it okay to do that?

i wouldn't. i think that's too much stress on the hair.

I have been using the goody ouchless bands but I have noticed some breakage from them. I'm going to try the satin scrunchies that have been mentioned here.

I have been faithfully doing the air dry and its working so much better than I thought. My hair is so thick even when I blow dry I still cant get it dry. So when I wash and pull it back and tie it up, it still takes 2 1/2 days to dry completely. I must stay I was super impressed with the Salerm 21 & Elasta QP Mango shea butter, that is what I used and my hair is so moist, shiny and straight I couldnt believe it, for me not to have blow dryed or flat ironed.

I wear phony ponies and 1/2 wigs through out the week, but only while im at work, soon as I get home, off they go and I sit around the house with just the baggie on. I make sure to put a lot of oil (WGO, Surge lotion potion#9 & Carrot oil) on my edges to keep them moist so they dont break or thin.

I have a question. My hair is a lil thinner in the back crown area where i usually wear my fake ponytail w/ the baggie method, that is where i place the bobby pins and the ponytail comb goes. Does anyone know how to not put so much stress on the hair right there? I know i could wear it in a different position, but i wrap my pony up so it looks like a bun, it would not look right lower down on my head. Are there any pre-made buns that you can purchase that will look right lower? Sorry so long! and TIA

I have a pre-made bun that I wear on the lower part of my hair. But I think you would have to try a bun out to see if it's the look you're going for.
