I am wondering if someone knows how to do a ponytail that has a "bump" in the crown area or the front? I have tried, but with no success. I know someone here has achieved it, successfully.

Can someone help me out, please?

i was looking for info on this as well. i believe the hairdo is called a "quiff" ponytail/updo. i also saw it called a "pompadour"

i found this link which gives sgtep by step directions
http://www.hairboutique.com/tips/tip21106.htm
^the directions are geared towards white people since they feature gwen stefani but i guess it can be helpful

here are some pics that came up with the search

So these are called quiff ponytails.:scratchch I've never done backcombing, wouldn't that be damaging or is there a safe way to do this?

back combing as in combing your hair away from your hairline? i never heard it to be damaging. i know a few people who do it and have healthy hair. i figure as long as your moisterize, condition and not pull your hair back to tight or secure it too tight it will be ok.

Quiffs were big over here for younger girls in London about 3 or 4 years ago, I think people still wear them occasionally. I wasn't good at backcombing but I pefected an alternate technique. You need to section off some of your hair at the front as per the instructions and pony tail the rest (or comb it down out the way) comb the quiffy part FORWARDS or UP holding it loosely at the end. From here you should be able to lift it back and clip it in place with a flat slide (one of them closed bobby pin things) Another cheats way which alot of people did was to section it, comb it up and then roll (as in the start of a flat twist) it ONCE and very loose then pin that. That way is easier. You can either redo the ponytail to put the end of the quiff hair in it or if it's short just leave it out.

Ill see if I can find any pics of mine...

I found 2 that show the twisty bit but none are from the front sorry. Mine are more like the second set of pics posted earlier but if you want it more Aaliyah-esque - BTW I think that may have been where the craze started here - you part wider and father back and you don't really use a comb. My quiff is about a 4 inch square but not very high - if you don't backcomb that depends on how you twist/how much hair is in it. I find a bit of new growth helps too =) HTH

ETA: Yes I am in a club, havin a bit too much fun lol

A lot of people use a bit of synthetic braid hair or a small sock (ie sock bun) to make the hump. So you won't have the damage from backcombing!

thanks for the ideas. i always see this hair do but never seen any info on how to do one. i found those 2 links by accident and i know they werent the best either.

i want to try one this weekend. i think they are so cute if they are done the right way and its not too hi for your face shape.

another great idea. i was wondering if they had someone for that, but never seen it at the stores. making my own sounds like a better idea

fyi, backcombing (or teasing) the hair is damaging to the hair. You are combing against the hair's cuticle. It is very damaging if you do it often. I used to do this style years ago, but i haven't done it recently and i see that it's back in style now. I used to just section the hair, so that you have the outer hair will remain straight, then spray water on the hair that will be your hump, so that it will frizz up and become puffy, then you wont have to back comb. make the hump with the frizzy hair and then smoothe the straight hair over it.

Oh, I see. I thought back combing was like teasing your hair to make it puff out.
ETA: I just saw your post Mizani, that's what I thought about backcombing.

Thank you! And thanks to all of you who posted pics. I am going to try it this weekend and take some pics if I can get it to look right. :)

This style is being worn on the show, Commander In Chief tonight by a woman (blonde) playing an important staff member of the White House. It looks very classy.

This is off the subject but I wanna know how to do the hair in your avatar. I hate the way my bun looks most of the time.
