Hello!
I recently decided to join this forum after lurking around shyly for a while. I don't have an album yet, but I hope to put one together soon.

Until then, I have some questions for anyone out there who transitioned to Natural, or just knows there stuff /images/graemlins/wink.gif.

I haven't gotten a touchup in 6 months. To keep my hair looking good with the 2 textures, I have been pressing my new growth weekly at home using Shea Butter like pressing oil. Is this a smart thing to do? Or am I damaging my hair ? /images/graemlins/blush.gif

Since I started transitioning, I have started to suffer with a really dry scalp on the crown of my head /images/graemlins/frown.gif. So I have some damage (easily camoflaged) there too. Does anyone have tips on how to combat that?

TIA!
Chrissy

Re: New Member-Please Help!

Hi ChrissyinLA and welcome to the board. I'm a relaxed head and can't really tell you anything about transitioning, but I think there are a few ladies here who have pressed their new growth without problems. Some things that you should be concerned about is maintaining the 2 textures and trying to avoid breakage as much as possible. I think shea butter is a good choice to use on your hair, as it is very moisturizing. At least once a month you should probably do a protein treatment to keep the hair strong. Girl there's so much I could go on and on. Take a look around, do a few searches, and ask questions as you think of them. Before you know it you'll come up with a good hair care regime that works well for you. /images/graemlins/smile.gif Good luck on your hair journey.

PS. Nice pic in your avatar. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi Chrissy,

I am a natural 4a who transitioned with a press and curl. I pressed mine weekly as well. I didn't suffer much damage from it. But as soon as I had 5 inches of natural hair, I cut the perm off. I suggest you do the same as soon as you have enough hair to work with. It makes things a lot easier.

I'm a bookworm, but I feel that every transitioner should buy "No Lye" by Tulani Kinard. It's a really good book for new naturals. It's very straight, well written, and very informative. She breaks down everything from:

The "truth" about relaxers
Basic grooming techniques
Easy Styles/Braids
Black Hair History (very interesting)
What natural hair should avoid

I refer to it from time. It's really a great book!

Thanx for responding! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

ArmyQT; With the protein, do I need to use a conditioner along with it? Ive heard of these b4 and Im just not too sure how to use them...

Brighteyes-Im a bookworm too /images/graemlins/wink.gif. I actually checked her book out before, but I havent purchased it. I did get Andres book and Pamela Ferrells book also.

Thanx for the welcome Allandra!

Whenever doing most protein treatments, I would suggest always following up with a moisturizing conditioner. But ensure they're done separately, so each can do it's job.
