OMG i can believe (i just did this 1 hour ago) i only have 2 in of hair. I just chopped it off (9 in of relaxed hair with 2in of newgrowth).... I was crying earlier but im okay it looks kinda choppy. So now that im natural...where do i start? BTW I feel like a man!!!!!!!!!!! lol

ayeshia, I didn't know you were going natural. Congrats, and you're very courageous to have done the big chop yourself.

You might want to start by doing twist-outs using a pomade or gel and conditioner washing frequently. Good luck! And I'm sure you don't look like a man, you're very pretty (and feminine).

This was the thing I didnt now i was going natural till like 2 hrs ago i had no plans of doing this...thats the weird part....Its sorta like vivian greens now. I just saw my hair and started chopping...thanx soulchild!!!!!

oh and now that i washed it it looks really good cuz it curled up (Now i definitely know my hair type....3B)i like it a lot!!!!!!!!!

u will probably need to get used to it but, i am sure u will find some fly styles quick, try looking on some of those natural sites for their tips....girl i wish i had the guts, cause i love that look.post pics when u can......

Ayeshia,

Congrats girl! I'm on the fence right now, trying to decide whether or not to do the big chop, or continue transitioning. We are in a very similar place, right down to the date of last relaxer (mine was 7/15/03), so you MUST keep me posted on how you're doing. My hair is about 4 inches above my bra strap, but I'm so sick of the permed part!!!

Let me know your products/routine are you figure all that out for your natural hair. And again, congrats girl!

I did the big chop last weekend. I have my hair braided now, but I definitely like the short cut. I got tired of dealing with the relaxed hair also.

congrats! i wish i had your guts to chop it all off when i first went natural. heres some tips if you plan to stay natural so that you wont make some of the same mistakes i made.

get a good gel (Fantasia IC with sparkle lites is the best IMO) to have sleek edges

use ONLY moisturizing/detangling shampooos and conditioners

consider a no poo routine if you have really dry hair

ONLY COMB HAIR WHEN WET (cause dry combing will snap hairs)

add styling products on soaking wet hair for a really curly look

Oh my gosh! That is so cool. Man the times when I have wanted to do it, I was discouraged by someone else, because they told me I would be upset later. And to think you weren't even going natural to begin with! Oh my goodness I love the spontaneity. Good luck!

Thanx everbody...Now I cant even play in my hair cuz I have none! No telling when I'll ever reach brastrap or even shoulder length for that manner. Which is why I have a ? in my signature anymore advice?

Ayeshia,

Girl, you sound just like me when I made that same cut. Lol...I was all like "What in the hell did I just do". I mean, that comment was even after months of research and decision-making. Anyway, you'll be fine since you have plenty of ppl here to help you out. I liked natural, but I had no idea how to take care of it and I'm a 4a/b ( :/ can't quite get away w/ undone hair like that).

I'm thinking about going back to natural because now I realize that the advice I got previously was not good at all. I was told to not use petroleum or mineral oil based products. pshhhhhhh! Now I know that's all I should've been using. They're the only things heavy enough to instantly quench my hair.

So, do this (this what I plan on doing when I'm completely natural)

-Wash with Creme of Nature shampoo

-Simple shake your hair of dripping water. Don't towel dry because you want to keep that water in because it's the best moisture there is. The only problem is that you need a way to seal that moisture...

-Add some heavy, petroleum based product to hair. I mean, saturate that hair w/ the product. Leejure gave some good advice about simply using Vaseline. It's petroleum and you know it won't leave any granules on your hair if you rub it in completely.

-If you want, fluff your hair only slightly with a blow-dryer w/ a comb attachment for about a minute or two. Keep the heat setting on low because you just want to dry your hair, not dry out your hair.

-Once dry (even after air-drying), spray a bit of African Royal Braid Spray to add a bit more moisture.

-After this, just make sure to keep it neat w/ a nice neck edge up. Also, use this time to really thicken and grow out that hair-line, especially around the temples.

*************

Also, make sure to be ultra-feminine with this hair cut. This means:

-Nicely defined eyebrows, which can make a world of difference.

-Clear skin, even if that means concealer

-Nice and fresh make-up.

-Cute earrings

-Cute tops with flattering neck and bust-lines (These include halters

WORK IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Way to go! That took some real guts

try searching for Peachtree, and I think Den1's regimens. They have great natural hair and good routines. I know there are a whole lot more people with great natural hair here, these are the only names I can think of right off the bat. I am seriously considering going natural as well, keep us posted on how things are going with your new doo.

Congrats. The big chop takes a lot of bravery (especially when you don't have a lot of new growth). It looks like itismehmmkay gave you some excellent advice. I would just add that you may want to try a thick creamy leave in to help with curl definition. You can use a conditioner as a leave in (maybe Pantene Hydrating Curls) or a curl defining leave in (like Aveda Be Curly). Good luck

Wow thanx for the great advice...I wash with cream of nature shampoo.I'm going empty though. Vaseline is my best friend right now since my moisturizer is gone and it does wonders! I dunno what Im going to do with the rest of my products for relaxed/color treated hair. I wonder does it make a difference? I'll prolly use them up anyway. As far as the eyebrows go...I have the thickest eyebrows ever so you dont have to worry about me in that department. And I do gotta get sum jewelry. Usually my ears are under my hair so earrings werent necessary, but it is so i definitely gotta do some accesoriy hunting. Damn I wish I could wear those cute shirts but its too cold (I live in Buffalo BTW). I have to wait till summer....Pray for me!!!!

i never straigten my hair anyway except on a few ocassions, and the only reason why i got one was to tame the frizz but now with these new serums and other hair care products coming out, i think ill be able to maintain my hair better without the relaxer. I hope to post pics by next monday....so be looking out!
