if your hair was breaking partly due to stretching, and you wanted to continue to stretch. What would you do to combat the breakage, and what would you use.

Thanks....

try hot oil treatments everytime you wash your hair so that your new growth gets loosen up.

You really may just need to relax. Breakage while stretching is a sure sign it's time to relax (unless of course you are transitioning). If you are just determined to continue on, less manipulations, plenty of moisture, and patience while detangling is very important.

I don't mean to step on anyone's toes here, but I don't see the point in stretching, if it's going to cause your hair to break or thin.

We all have different hair types, which responds differently to varying treatments. Perhaps, you need to get touchups more frequently than 16 weeks, ya know?

protective styles are always good like buns, twists/braidouts and braids are good too. I think that co-washes are great, wash your hair in sections and detangle with jilbere shower comb.

Yea i see what u are saying. If stretching is causing MAJOR breakage then it's time to get a touchup. however, this is my way of thinking that stretching will result in stronger healthier hair. Okay.....so as many times as I've had a touchup, i have never had a stylist who has PERFECTED the technique of applying the relaxer ONLY to the Newgrowth. There is always a little bit of overlapping. So if your hair is relaxed every 6weeks, and in this timeline, your hair grows 1/2 inch. A typical stylist will probably still relax like a 1.5 inches (or even more). So this means that all of your previously relaxed hair will be relaxed at least 3 times. But if you get your hair touched up like every 10weeks and your hair grows 1 1/2 inches, then your stylist will relax that 1 1/2 inches and may overlap a little bit, BUT your hair will never be relaxed more than twice. Does that make sense? It's kinda hard to explain as im typing but it is the reason why i decided to stretch to at least 8wks from now on. to eliminate overlapping.

okay anways, what i did to prevent breakage was i did a DEEP COND treatment everytime i washed. (2/wk) and I applied alot of LEAVE-IN and alot of OIL to the hair and i combed my hair up in a ponytail, i applied vaseline to my hair and secured it with a BAGGY. I then sported my favorite phony pony for the last 2 weeks. bottom line is just wear a protective style...don't try to style your hair out or otherwise you'll fry it as you are trying to straighten/curl it. And by the way i was in week 10.5 and i did not have any breakage at all. I only have like a normal thin amount in the comb after i combed out the conditioner....

I just stretched my relaxer to 16wks. I did a lot of cw after week 12. I also did a heavy protein every 4-6 wks. I also love protective styles.

last stretch was 5 months this time i am going for 5 months too. I will continue to stretch 5-6 months until I reach my goal. Which is waist lenght hair. What has helped me in stretching is cutting off of all my relaxed ends and leaving behind the texturized/relaxed hair. Meaning I leave the relaxer on for 10-12 minutes and smooth it untill it is relatively straight no waves. With the relax hair no matter what i did it broke if I extend it. Now I conditon wash every day, deep condition 3 times a week including hot oil treatments( coconut ,castor oil, olive oil and palm oil). Surge, castor oil or mtg the roots of my hair to soften the new growth. I scurl the length of my hair and baggie, Hope it helps, the bottom line is relaxing the hair for 10-12 minutes has really made a differance in the strenght of my hair.

This is something I've always wondered, myself. I just never had the courage to bring it up for fear of getting flamed. :ohwell: If i tried to stretch past 8 weeks I'd be in very bad shape. But that's just me.

Relax. I thought about stretching too, but I'm relaxing this Friday (12 wks post). I would have liked to have stretched to 5 months, but my hair says it's time now!
