After reading all the rave reviews about Phytorelaxer, I decided that I had to try it for my next touchup. I don't self-relax, so I searched the forum for a stylist in my area that does it and found a few posts about Ivy Rector at Salon Cielo in the Pentagon City Mall (Arlington, Virginia).

Yesterday I went to see her for my touchup. I was 12 weeks post and when she looked at my hair, she commented on how healthy it was afer such a long stretch (I don't think 12 weeks is a really long stretch compared to some of the other ladies on the board!) She was surprised that there were no broken off sections, holes (bald spots?), and my ends were healthy.

She says she is contemplating joining the board because she has had quite a few people come to her to get their hair done and say that they were referred to her by longhaircareforum members and she wanted to say thanks for the referrals. Plus she was impressed when I was shared with her the tips and techniques I learned here to keep my hair healthy during the stretch. There is so much good information on this board and I am addicted!!!! Thank you so much ladies for all your help and advice. My main challenge is to thicken up my hair. I shed horribly so my hair is very thin, but I think that may be due to my iron deficiency anemia and I am going to start taking supplements and see if that helps. I also am going to try Qhemet's herbs and sulfur pomade as a grease for my scalp because I had some good results with Sulfur 8 when I was in college some years ago.

Anyhow, the things I loved about the Phytorelaxer and Ivy:

1. She did an excellent job not overlapping!

2. I did not burn at all!!! I never even felt any tingling!!! This has never happened to me before with any other relaxer! Even when I wouldn't get burned, my scalp would still be on fire for like two or three days after my relaxer. The Phyto was so gentle and my scalp was loving it!

3. After I was rinsed (she used just water for like ten minutes), conditioned (she explained to me that she conditions before neutralizing because the conditioner penetrates better), then neutralized, I was surprised at how much body my fine, thin hair had! My hair is straight, but it still has life! That is one of the things I hate most about getting a relaxer, the thin, limp, pasted-to-my-scalp hair that I am left with for the first 2 or 3 weeks post. Not this time with the Phyto! I am amazed at how full my hair is!

4. Ivy is not scissor-happy, something she assured me of as soon as I got in the chair. Due to the good condition of my hair, she took off next to nothing for my trim.

5. The $135 price tag includes everything, relaxer, deep condition, trim, etc. I know that sounds like a lot, but I don't think it's bad for ensuring that my hair is correctly processed and since I will be doing 12 week stretches from now on, I only have to get it done 4 times a year.

6. Ivy was extremely professional and knowledgeable (sp?) and I highly recommend her, and I highly recommend Phytorelaxer. The Salon's number is 703-415-0406. Ivy's hours are M 9:30-7, Tu 12-9, Th 11-7, F 11-7, Sa 9-4:30 (she only works every other Saturday).

I pincurled my hair last night and it looks great today! Pincurling is working so well for me that I would like to get rid of my Carusos, which I've only used once and had for less than a month. I bought them at Sally's for $29.99 and will give them up for $20. I'll even pay for the shipping. PM me if you want 'em.

I will try to update the pic in my avatar (that's a random pic of my hair 10 weeks post) and maybe put some random pics in my siggy this weekend.

Great post!! Did you have a lye relaxer prior? What kind of relaxer did you have? What brand of products did Ivey use on your hair?

Hi Amina,

I'm really bad about finding out what relaxer the stylists use in my hair! I know I deserve an :hammer: :whip: for that! I just tell them I have sensitive scalp and they use whatever! I believe that my last relaxer (before Phyto, Ivy) was an Affirm Lye. I think it's okay to go straight from the Lye to the Phyto, just make sure you have enough new growth to help the stylist not overlap. Also, when Ivy first looked at my hair she said that she thought I was a good candidate for Phyto because my hair is fine/thin. She said that sometimes it doesn't take really well in thicker, coarse hair. That's not a rule. She just said "sometimes".

Ivy used the Phyto products for the rinse, condition, etc. She said that when she first learned about Phyto (from clients asking her for the perm that Oprah uses) she took a class before she started using it. She said that the people at Phyto are really particular about only using their products with the relaxer because that works best.

However, she likes the KeraCare line and recommended several products for me to use for at home maintenance (the hydrating shampoo, Humecto, and their essential oil). I really like Humecto, but I stopped using it because I want to switch over to more natural, almost chemical free products. So I've been using Aubrey's Organics White Camelia and Honeysucle Rose conditioners and I recently ordered some Qhemet products from curlmart.com. I'm off liquid shampoos for regular use because they are too stripping for my hair. I use an herbal hair wash (it's a powder of Indian herbs) that I mix with water and apply to my hair. I got it from www.bindi.com. I did purchase a small tube of Nexxus Aloe Rid for clarifying. I haven't used it yet, but went with that because several ladies on the board recommended it for gentle clarifying.

I am really glad to read your Rave for PhytoSpecific's relaxer! That is my next relaxer of choice and I need the assurance that my hair will not fall out.

I tried a "natural" relaxer some years ago and it ate my hair ALIVE!!!!! My hair was long a healthier back then. I just hated that and don't want that to happen again!

Thanks Again!
MonaRae

THanks for responding Sweet One. I agree with you about the Keracare. I am new to taking care of my hair and I suffered some areas of breakage and have thin temples. I bought some of the Aubrey Organics poos and conds and actually used a little of the the rose moisturizing cond as a leave in. My hair really responded well. I am moving towards more natural products as well. I will look into some of your suggestions. I also use Humecto and like it but there is something about it that I feel is just not the same as when I use "natural" products. I am currently 8 weeks post and experiencing alot of new growth but I am trying for 12 weeks. All I can say about the Phyto relaxer is.... well if its good enough for Oprah......

I want a Phyto. I was just talking to my mom today and she was saying how I shouldn't ever get a relaxer after what happened a few years ago. But I still want one. I'm contemplating the risks and pros. But if I do get one, I will have to be 1.) Bra strap length
2.) have healthy hair
3.) Use Phytospecific or Ferm by Avalon.

 :D

Thanks for the review. Glad you liked it.

Question: Phyto takes a long time to neutralize compared to other brands. If she conditioned your hair before neutralizing then that means that the relaxer is still technically active right? I know you said she rinsed for about 10 minutes but did she say why and what the significance was? Does rinsing that long bring the pH down low enough as to not cause damage?

When I used other brands I used to condition before neutralizing but since I know Phyto can take forever it seems to accomplish that I never tried that. How long did it take for the neutralizer to work?

The Carusos are gone! MonaRae they are yours since you were the first person to PM me. I just sent you a PM for your address.

Honi,

I'm not sure she rinsed for exactly ten minutes. But she did rinse for a long time. That was just my best guess. I see your point that the relaxer could have still been active since we didn't neutralize right away, however, I'm sure she would not have done this if it would have damaged my hair so I was okay with it. I think the Phyto is gentle enough to allow you to do that. After the conditioner sat for a while (I think another 10 minutes), the shampoo girl gave me two rinses with the neutralizer and that was that! Hope that helps!

My stylist did this with Phyto and Affirm. If im not mistaken, affirm (no-lye) directions say to apply the conditioner before the neutralizing shampoo. I called a phyto rep to find out if its okay to put the reconstructor on before neutralizing and she said it was fine, that because the cuticles were still open and would condition better but to still use the neutalizing shampoo afterwards. Just to play it safe, i neutralize first and then use the reconstructor.

Glad to hear you had such a great experience. I tried Phyto and never looked back :D
