who at the forum wears phonytails as protective styles with the baggie method? and what do you think this does for you? I am going to do this for the rest of my challenge (which ends next year this time).

If you do wear them....what kind is it, and do you do styles in the front(flat twists bangs etc...)?

curiouos mind wants to know.

I did it a couple of weeks ago, and my ends stayed moisturized for the entire week. This style also helped me keep my hands out of my hair. I'm not going to do it very often, only when my ends need TLC because when I took the phonytail out, I broke off a little hair in the front because I'm not patient! I usually just brush the hair back in a ponytail, but now that I'm back home, I'm going to have my mom cornrow or twist the front in different designs. Hope this helps.

thanks dime!

I will be getting a phonytail myself shortly and depending on how I like it I will be sporting that style for the whole summer! (with the baggie underneath)

goldie, as you know, i've been using this particular method for about two years now, ever since i stopped wearing the braids. what the baggie does is help keep my ends moisturized constantly until i wash my hair again. because they stay protected, i only have to add my products to them once a week. the vaseline seals the moisture from the activator in.

i just wear my hair pulled back in a bun, but flat twists would be a cute variation on the style if i knew how to do them. lol! are you gonna try it that way?

Hi adrienne!

Yeah I am tinking of doing the flattwists in the front sometimes and playing with parting my hair in different places for variations...once in a while I may even get my real hair cornrowed into a bun in an elaborate style and use the phonytail over that. When I do it like that I can take it down once a week to wash, but with just a regular bun I will wash it every 3 days.

Every since Adrienne posted this method on BHCAB, I have been addicted to "phonytaily" and buns. I now have about 3 different styles of buns and one phonytail that I use religiously. Actually, I wore my hair out today at work and my manager was like, "Wow, I've never seen your hair like that!" Everyone is used to my hair being pulled back.

Anyway, thanks to Adrienne, I haven't used heat on my hair in over 8 months!! And its working wonders. My hair gorws VERY slowly (I refuse to take vitamins) but I can see progress.

Have any of you seen the ones that look like a twist or braid out? That's what I'm looking for to use this summer. I've been unable to find one....

What a great thread!

Phonytails and phonybuns have been a "must have" for me when I grew out my hair before. I have even managed to assimilate one on the top of my short hair now by slicking back my hair and clipping a phonytail carefully to the top. There are so many styles to chose from so it's so easy to have variation and eliminate boredom while maintaining hair health....

Hey Love...

I have never worn one before but I am hoping that it becomes a style I will want to keep because it looks so simple and you can pull together a very neat look while as you said protecting the hair underneath! I will let you know how it turns out for me.

missj, a baggie is a plain sandwich bag, not the ziploc kind but the ones that fold over the sammich. lol! after moisturizing your hair, you just wrap it in the baggie and put on your phonytail. i put a cutoff stocking on before the phonytail. it cuts down on the "noise" of the baggie...

You got me thinking Adrienne, I'm going to try this when my hair is out. will just a stocking cutoff work?

Darn, and y'all wear your hair like that on a regular basis? Is the phonytail like a weave ponytail?

i LOOOVE this quick reply window because now i can see all the posts i want to respond to. nikos rocks!!!

lucia, i've tried it with just the cutoff stocking. the stocking really soaks up all the product from the hair. that's why i continue to wear the baggie underneath.

missj, i wear like this for 4-5 weeks at a time, depending on how often i wear it down. i guess you could say the phonytail is like a weave ponytail. it's definitely made of the same hair. it has combs on it and a drawstring that you tighten to keep it secure on your head. i've NEVER had one even think about slipping off. i sometimes have to fight it to take it off.

Well I'm going to have to go the weave store and get one, I think I may do straight and curly look, cause it's gonna be HOTT this summer.
thanks Adrienne.

you're welcome! let me know which one you end up with. i always wanted to try a curly one, but i've never found one that looked quite right. usually they're either too big, look too frizzy still in the store, or the hair is hard. if you find a good one, lemme know what brand it is.

Okay. I'm almost afraid to admit it, but I have NEVER been able to figure out how to do the drawstring ponytail.

Would someone be kind enough to tell me how to do a drawstring ponytail. I never seem to get it to secure enough.

I bought a lovely strawset one from these guys... Kinda pricey, but it is human hair and is quite nice!
SassyStrawSet PhonyTail Quick question... how do I put actual pics into these posts? I don't see anywhere to cut and paste. I would just love to drop the photo in...

ellen, what i do is remove the bottom comb (if it has two). after i put my hair up, i slide the ponytail on making sure the comb doesn't dig into my scalp. then i tighten the drawstring. after it's pulled pretty taut, i wrap the drawstring around three times then tuck it in underneath. the reason i tuck it in at the same spot is so i'll know exactly where to go to take it loose. i put two scrunchies around to camouflage it. it really stays put!!

Hi Adrienne,

How do you take the second comb out of the ponytail? I've decided I'm going to try out your method for the summer.

up until last year i've worn a "phonytail" every day for 6 yrs and everyone thought it was my own hair until i had to cheerleade at this game and we were all given baseball caps to wear that wouldn't fit over my tail, so i stuffed it on and while i was jumping up and down the pt fell off!!! a hush came over the crowd!! then everyone was like "what the f#$@!" i was never so embarresed lol luckily i regained my composure and took down my own hair which made everyone shut the f@#$ up! cause as it turned out my own hair was the length of the poneytail! so i had the last laugh...*S*S*
anyway... i noticed that when i stopped wearing tails last year there is like a lil bald spot where i had been putting the hairpins. i wasn't using the tail with the string; i had my own techinique of wrapping tracks around my bun and pinning them with bobbypins... have any of you noticed like a little spot forming where you put the tail?

ajamericandiva: i love that strawset pt, but wow whats up with that price!!! i have to say though it looks very authentic; i may have to buy one lol
you girls are driving into pj'ism! someone save me!

it happened to me! my cheersquad does stunts and i'm a base. our flyer came down from a stunt and she took my ponytail down with her. fortunately it was pinned in tight but it was hanging by thread. the whole squad surrounded arpound me and did cheer while another girl put it back in. no body noticed and to was an a away game. so i'm alright

pooh, the combs are sewn on. i just loosen the stitch on one side. then i pull the comb apart from it, which loosens the stitches even more. then it just pulls off. try it.

lunalight, you just have to know what to ask for. my friend also has blond highlights. she has a ponytail that's color 1B/27. they sell them with the lighter color mixed in or as highlights.

diva, to put a photo in your post, right-click on it then select properties. there you will find the actual URL for the photo. highlight and copy that. then click on image below the window where you're posting and paste the URL there. preview to make sure you did it right.

sylvia, look at this one that i think is also really cute, but only costs $15.00 at Doctored Locks:

I push the comb through my rubber band instead of my hair. It's a good fit. Plus I can't do the bobby pin thing. My ponytail looks like a hot mess when I try.

adrienne:thanx for the hookup! i was trying to figure out how i could justify spending 45 on my tight budget. *L*

ineedmoney: you and me too! i need a cool million but 5grand could put me in the black.

I knew I recognized you. You're on that Growafrohairlong.com website! You have wonderful hair--do you follow everything on the website?
