i have been transitioning for the past 7.5 months with 3- 4 inches of new growth thru out my hair. i love the texture of my natural hair---wavy and thick but the last couple of months have been really challenging, with me wanting to just throw in the towel for about the last 6 weeks -- tangles when washing, hair looking dry and wierd, not laying down, peices sticking up etc. i however decided to just committ to transitioning for 1 year and to see what develops. well the darnest thing happen this week, all of a sudden my hair started to shine and lay down and it seemed that the texture changed and it is starting to look like the hair i had as a child. QUESTION 1: did anyone else transitioning have this experience or is this just my imagination?? QUESTION 2 : i recently tried to flatiron the new growth with my Ceramic Tools flat iron ( i have been heat free for the last 7 months) and it didn't straightened out my waves at all; this iron worked well with my relaxed hair but doesn't seem to do anything with the natural , wavy hair. i pt the setting on 13 but i was afraid to go higher because i don't want to damage my hair. after trying to straighted a couple of peices, i just gave up. has anyone else had this experience with the ceramic tools? does anyone have suggestions regarding another flat iron to purchase. i plan on using it maybe once a month. thanks

yes my hair did the same thing around my crown area

i think it was about 6 months into my transitioning when it happened.....it went from nice chalk size spirals to s-shaped waves almost a straight texture

Yep. It was around 8 months for me. But it got softer and shinier. I don't really flatiron(except after I do a roller set).If I don't air dry and wear curls, then I wet set and then straighten.

For about 5 or 6 months I thought I was growing shag carpeting instead of hair. It was very rough and dry. The natural hair books call it "scab hair". I think I was just using the wrong products. I don't want to believe that I had chemical residue underneath my scalp!

Yes, that happened to me. That is when I got in front of the bathroom mirror and chopped all of the relaxer out.

Let's see, I only transitioned for 4 months before I cut, I didn't really see any difference in my hair texture. It was dry but after a couple of months I was able to find a routine which gave me softer feeling hair.

I'm only about 3 months into it and I'm going through that now. But I do two things to keep me going:

ONE: I constantly find routines/products that work to keep the new growth soft while it sprouts. Right now, it's Elasta QP's "Feels Like Silk," which I find works wonders. I wet my hair at night w/ WARM water and use a paddle brush to distribute the lotion. I then either do cornrows (for a braidout) or four plaits, if I feel lazy..in the morning, my hair's always softer. S-Curl works much the same way.

I alternate the curly style w/ a gelled-back afropuff ponytail that lasts a week or two. So far, this is working. I'm tempting to press, but w/ the hot weather coming up, I think I'll hold off for cooler weather.

TWO: Every time I feel like giving up, I look at a pic of my inspiration (pinned up in my bedroom) that just blows me away each time.

JUST HOLD ON, don't give up.. it's all worth it a year from now, at the end of that rainbow.. I promise you!!!

Oh, this is my SECOND TIME transitioning. I was fully natural and made the mistake of relaxing one hell of an afro. Never again...
