Please post your hair regimen (including hair products, vitamins, care and styling procedures). You all seem to have a great deal of knowledge when it comes to hair and product selection and the hair to prove it:) I have only been a member of this forum for roughly four months now. I started during the Summer and was so excited about the forum. I went out and purchased all sorts of hair products and did my conditioning rinses and deep conditionings on a regular basis. Now that school has started (I'm teaching and attending graduate school) I find it hard to find the time to stick to a regimen. I also have found that daily conditioning rinses are not an option for me. For one,I don't have the time to do these and I have yet to find a way to style my hair after doing a conditioning rinse without blowdrying that is professional enough to wear to work.

Right now I have slipped back to washing my hair once every week and blowdrying to dry it quickly. I have tried roller setting but I do not get the same results as I get when I go to the salon. My hair comes out dry almost as if I had rolled it with rollers while dry. I have to apply a moisturizer and curl it using a curling iron or put it back into a french roll. I do try to put shea butter and Mango Butter on the ends when I notice that they are dry. When I go to bed, I just braid it to the back and tuck it under. I am not wrapping it up but I sleep on a satin pillow case. I stopped taking biotin after noticing its damaging effects on my skin (break out). lately my shoulder length hair appears to be extremely dry. I know this is due to my lack of care and attention. I do not have the time to shop and experiment with different products. Last week I bought a bottle of thermasilk's shampoo and conditioner and was not impressed by the results. Please help a sister out:)

PG,

You can find my regimen in the feature of the month section under July, okay. If there's anything else you'd like to know, please let me know. Also, there have been a few product changes to my regimen: I now use Nexxus Humectress, Kenra Moisturizing Conditioner, and Miss Key 10 en 1 as my staple conditioners.

Re: Paging Supergirl, Addriene, and brown relaxed

Thanks SG. I read your feature of the Month write up. Which conditioners have you replaced with Nexxus Humectress, Kenra Moisturizing Conditioner, and Miss Key 10 in 1? Also, how often do you do conditioning rinses? How often/when do you use leave-ins? Finally, how do you style your hair after conditioning rinses?

Re: Paging Supergirl, Addriene, and brown relaxed

All of the conditioners that I mentioned in the feature are the ones I am no longer using. They are still good products--I just like to change often.

I really don't use leave-ins anymore and I air-dry my hair hanging down after I wash it.

Supergirl~

Im very impressed with your hair. I was wondering what was your hair length before you started using tips from the forum. Im somewhat new the boards and the concept of self haircare. In the short time Ive been on the boards, Ive become quite a PJ, I may be addicted

Hi !!!

I think the best thing to do instead of me repeating is have a look in the Feature of the Month. I was a past 'victim'

The one thing I would say is learning to rollarset properly is priceless for maintaining healthy straight hair. It took me I would say a good year to really perfect it. It helped going to Dominican salons sometimes and really watching them do it. How the section the hair, what they use etc. The tricks are to make sure you do a good deep conditioning and finding a leave in you like or even a serum. The hair must stay wet through out putting the rollars in. It takes time and its fiddly and at times you want to give up but for me, I ended up going back to it and its the best thing. Fiddly yes, but worth the trial for the rewards

Amillion from this board has a fantastic post, step by step guide of how to do a rollarset. For me, that post alone helped me alot, like something just clicked

Blowdrying for me even just once a week would just make my hair ends so dried out, no matter what conditioner was used.

You may want to do a search here on conditioners as there are alot of past threads of favourite ones.

A lot of serums have "cones" as a primary ingredient. How do you ladies (3x) deal with or avoid your hair from drying out due to the use of serums/cone products? What step do you take to keep dry ends from happening when using these products?

Re: Paging Supergirl, Addriene, and brown relaxed

Spagirl,

I don' t have any problems with using the cones.

Bryantgirl,

I came to the hair-boards about a year ago. My hair was about 3 or 4 inches shorter than it is now

Is there anything possibly you might be doing that might be keeping you from having problems with cones? Example: Do you limit your use of cones as a final product post the other things you use on a daily bases or every fews days etc.?

Re: Paging Supergirl, Addriene, and brown relaxed

Well,

I just think that some peoples' hair does not react well to cones and others have hair that "loves" cones. Many of my products have some kind of cone in them.

Generally I don't have a problem using cone products and serums. The 2 serums I use are L'anza Be Long serum and Keracare Silken Serum. To avoid drying hair out for anything used, I just make sure to use a good moisturizing conditioner and to leave it on for a while first. Sometimes I"ll add extra virgin olive oil to increase the moisture. Once you done that, your hair should be in a better condition to also use a serum on the ends. There are some girls though here that don't like cones no matter what so its a case of seeing if its something that works with you. The biggest thing to avoid dried ends is to stop blowdrying.

Thanks Supergirl and RBH for sharing your insight. The reason for my question is because of a number of years ago I used to use "Shine" a product that had "cones" as a primary ingredient. After experiencing some breakage and doing some trial and error I found out the culprit was the "Shine cone product". After joining LHCF I came upon some info that said certian "cones" seal the hair and that moisture couldn't get in post using cones. I also found that "cones" could be used by some, like you ladies, without having the problems I was experiencing, breakage. So I posted the question hoping that I might find a way I could use "cones" without it being a detriment to my hair. Outside of the breakage, I like how my hair looks when I use products with cones in them. So again, Thanks for you help!

Spagirl:

Some cones are water soluble and some are not. That might be an issue with dryness post cone usage. I'd have to search for info as to which cones are water soluble but I recall reading that cones ending in -ol (i.e. dimethiconol) are the water soluble ones.

HTH!

ok, thick question coming: so this means water soluble cones are the drying ones?

Re: Paging Supergirl, Addriene, and brown relaxed

I think she's saying the water soluble cones are the non drying cones. Here are the ingredients on my old "Shine" bottle no "ol" endings:
<ul type="square"> cyclomethicone
isodecane
dimethicone
octy p methoxycinnamate
propylparaben
fragrance [/list]

Now that I think about it, I remember reading somewhere that amodimethicone (a cone in Motion's leave-in) is a water soluble cone. I'm gonna do a search right now and see what I come up with.

Here's what I found:

[ QUOTE ]
With the exception of products containing amodimethicone, which is water soluble, I have to use silicones sparingly because it builds up on my hair too quick and ends up drying my hair if I use it everyday. I use it occasionally when I want my hair to look shiny and glossy, but I think u can get the same effects from non cone products such as oils (jojoba, coconut) and glycerine.

[/ QUOTE ]

That is the one I remember reading. It's found here Silicones in Natural Hair

This might be the one SVT was refering to What's wrong with cones

Yes. I think the water soluble cones are less likely to cause dryness than the non water soluble cones.

I read the two threads you listed, Spagirl. I've also understood amodimethicone to be water soluble in addition to those cones ending in -ol.

If I run across some definitive, technical articles on the net, I'll post those links.
