Hi Amilion

I made my appt with Marcus for Wednesday. I was reading the site and he said he trims with every relaxer application (every 6-8 weeks)! Now my ends are pretty good and have lasted four months without needing a trim. This time I will need one though. I want to grow my hair out and I feel if I trim with every relaxer I will get nowhere. Is it possible for him not to trim all the time?? Also, is he really scissor happy?? Sorry with all the questions but I am really scared.

Uhmmm. I can't recall him trimming my ends everytime I went to him. But listen, tell him straight up, if you trim, I want you to trim only 1/4 of an inch. Or if you feel as if you don't need a trim, tell him. Don't let anyone bully you into feeling as if you need a trim.

If he says you require a trim, ask him why. He's understanding and pretty easy to talk to. I went in there once to get a treatment and I know I had to have a trim, but man, you know how it can be sometimes....but anyway, he told me, you need a trim, your ends are kind of stringy and I said nooooooo....he started to laugh and he was like, I understand. But he also broke it down to me how it can give my hair a healthier appearance and etc.

Thank you for the information. Now I am trying to wait patiently until Wednesday /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Also he asked who referred me to him and I said his name was all over this board. He found that funny. If you want to email me your name because usually you get a freebie when you refer someone (hot oil treatment, conditioner, etc.) My email address is [email protected]

Now that I have your attention, I have a question. Is 20 inches your current length or goal? Forgive me if this has been explained in the past.

20" is the length of my hair currently. It's actually not very long on me because I'm tall. /images/graemlins/frown.gif

My goal's to have 25" hair. Right now my hair measured from my scalp to the tips is 11" to 12". I'm aiming for 16". Overrall, when measuring from my hairline to the tips, it's 20"

How do you get two different measurements? I don't understand. I am slow, please bare with me. What is 16 inches? How do you measure to get 20 inches?

That's okay, I understand. Someone posted that to get the true length of your hair, take a tape measure and place it at your hairline (forehead) and let it fall back and mark where your hair stops. Of course this doesn't take in account if you have layers or a bang cut. That is where I get the 20" from.

The 11-12", that's the true length of one of my hair strands that I've measured that has shed while combing.

Hi AmilLion, hope you don't mind my jumping in here! /images/graemlins/grin.gif
I was also curious as to how scissor happy (or not) Marvin is. I've been getting my ends trimmed gradually to get rid of this no-lye underprocessed hair. It can look really nice, as long as I roller set it with setting lotion, but it requires a LOT of maintenance. Thanks for that insight on Marvin's trimming philosophy. I checked out his web site, and I see that he suggests trimming after each touch up. I'm thinking about going back into braids for 3 or 4 months instead of getting the touch up I"ll need by mid-December because I'm trying to achieve length faster. If I decide to wait on the braids and go for the touch-up, I'll let you know. You should definitely get some sort of freebie for the referral!!

Marvin's really knowledgeable about hair, I really doubt that if you don't need a trim, he'll give you a trim. He's not scissor happy from my experience and when I asked him to trim my hair, he probably took off 1/4.

I know how we're all about achieving length and health, but sometimes a really good trim is necessary to give you the appearance of really bouncy and healthy hair. I recall years ago, it was explained to me that healthy hair you shouldn't be able to see through the ends. (ie) Adrienne, she has the ideal hair, healthy, even and you cannot see through her hair.
