I DC overnight on dry hair on a pretty regular basis. I often notice that my curl pattern is temporarily looser and my hair is able to be detangled easily(even though I wore a braid-n-curl all week which is pretty tangled by the end of the week).

Now, I was telling another member about my routine and it was mentioned that she heard an overnight DC can have the same affects of a relaxer because the conditioner is made up of chemicals.

Just curious, does anyone else believe this or have you heard of this?

I have never heard off that, but i also use majority natural products but I suppose i can see it happening because some chemical reaction but henna is known to do the same thing.

This happens to me and you probably need to do a protein treatment...your hair is over moisturized...I do not think it is because of the chemicals.

That doesn't really make sense.

Chemicals =/= sodium hydroxide. Everything is a chemical... and they do different things, and have different chemical structures.

If a condish had sodium hydroxide or some other caustic agent that broke down your hair's structure, then you probably wouldn't be using it...

I think Attraxion could be right - perhaps the temporary loosening is just being super duper moisturized, but I highly doubt that DCing overnight could be akin to a relaxer.

Just wondering if anyone else heard of it.

But I do complete moisture & protein treatments regularly and my hair seems to be benefiting from the overnight DCs. It's especially evident when I flat iron.

When I used to deep condition overnight my roots would loosen a bit, so I think more so it is b/c your hair is very moisturized... I wouldn't say over moisturize..

Sounds like the hair was over moisturized. I had that happen to me once and after a protein tx it went right back. That was the first time I used DPR 11 overnight. I'll never do that again. None of my other conditioners reacted like that after being left on overnight.
