:) I was told that my hair might be over-conditioned.
Any experts out there?
Has anyone ever heard of this, and what type of damage could this cause because my hair is thin.
Any advice would also be appreciated.
Thanks
HP

If your hair is limp and lifeless, it could be over conditioned. I've heard of the hair looking dull and ashy too. I don't know that it would caused any damage. Usually shampooing the hair and leaving it free of styling products for a couple of days can fix over conditioning.

Personally, I don't believe in "over conditioning." I do believe that the hair can need protein.

What exactly is your hair doing? How does it look. It may need to be clarified.

I had a beautician tell me this before. She noticed that although my hair was pretty healthy my ends tended to get thin at a certain length. I told her that I always had this problem and I try to improve it by adding more moisture to my ends twice a day. She then suggested that overmoisturizing can also cause breakage and to ease up on the leave in conditioner I was using. Since then, with the help of lhcf, I've learned the importance of using protein in my hair along with the moisturizing conditioners. So far, this combo has given me great results!

I've heard of this before and the sentence "You hair is over-conditioned" in the stylist world usually translates to "You may need a protein treatment" in the hair board world. But before I get into explainations and solutions can you please share what you've been doing and with what products?:)

I've heard of "over-conditioning", but whenever I see or hear about it, my hair begins to laugh hysterically. That is to say, I've never had that problem and can't imagine how much conditioner or moisturizer would bring it on. (And I have a very active imagination.) I know that there are people who have experienced it, though. But my hair loves moisture and conditioner and seems to never be able to get enough of it.

I agree with "Iwill" and "MizaniMami"......I've heard this before too. And MOST likely it's mushy and soft/thin because you need more protein. It's amazing how these beauticians have licenses...... I think I need to go to beauty school and open a salon....fa real......it's pitiful. After hearing all the horror stories on this board, you'd think some of us would get together and open a salon in each city or something.....

Yes, I've heard of over conditioning. Before this site I didn't think there could be such a thing but if you hair starts to feel mushy this might be a sign. Over conditioning can lead to breakage so it can be a bad thing. So I agree with the other ladies to add protein to you hair by using a poo and con that is proteined based or doing a protein treatment. You might want to add more protein in your diet from now on as well. But remember too much protein can lead to breakage as well so do over do it. You just want to have the perfect balance of moisture and protein for your hair to thrive. HTH

I've had overconditioned hair before and it will not hold any body or style.

In my opinion, it comes from using softening products (as opposed to moisture and protein). I have used products that make my hair soft but not necessarily moisturized ...and I see no purpose in that whatsoever.

So now I make sure any conditioners I use boast moisturizing properties. I think a lot of those cheap 99 cent jars of conditioners at the BBS just soften ...

My personal experience with overconditioning is over moisturizing. I religiously deep conditioned every week for one year with moisturizers -- more than protein treatments.

One day while washing, I noticed that when squeezing the water out of my hair, the ends of my hair started snapping off. Everytime I touced my hair, some would break off, esp in the kitchen area.

I could not understand it until I realized that I had overmoisturized my hair and it needed more protein. So now, instead of routienely (sp) treating my hair on a set treatment schedule, I treat it based on how it is feels.

Hope it helps.

Sorry for the delay. I used a variety of mositurizers. I found that they were not good for my hair.

You were right. It was very limp and lifeless. It wasn't dull, just lifeless.

Yes! I found that I was missing the needed protein for my hair. I was too much into super conditioning/moisture and not any protein...vitamins for the hair ya know.

I know. People here though are so helpful with everything. I find that there are actually some very nice people. I still use moisture, but more quality stuff and not just any junk on the market. I'm still learning what works for my hair and what it likes.

The mushy-ness was the lifelessness of my hair. Since I've had great advice from a so-wonderful buddy here, all that's changed.
Right! Balance is important, so I'm still learning what my hair is asking for at a given time.

I'm a natural so I'm not sure about that, but I do know that I will have to be more attentive. I will be relaxing sometime in the future.

I do believe that some of the topical leave-in super moisturizers that are not always best for my hair. I'm so glad because for the last few times I washed with my new regimine, I hardly have any hair come out. Better each time too. ;)

Yes. My ends are still a bit tangly. I think I need a trim, however I will wait until I relax to see the even-ness because it's so hard to tell this way and I don't want to b/d anymore. I think when my hair was too moisturized it weakened it. I stopped squeezing the water out of my hair and just let it go through the towel.

Thank you all for your input.
I really appreciate it.

I thought of this thread last night when I used NTM moisture recovery mask for the first time.

I went to Walgreens to buy Paul MIthcell's Super Charged Moisturizer because I had gotten too much protein this week ...and really wanted a rich moisturizer.

But they were out, so I got NTM.

As I scooped it out and applied it, it felt great! And after I took off the heat cap and rinsed it out, my hair felt like it had been in butter (that's how I like moisturizing treatments to feel) -- BUT after my hair dried ...it felt just soft, in fact more soft than I like it ... and not moisturized at all. Weird.

I could easily overcondition with this mask since it over-softens and still leaves me needing moisture ...which will lead to another treatment and so on...

I'm glad you found something that works for you. I never heard of this product, but it sounds interesting.:)

Help me out ladies,

How will I know if my hair is over conditioned and not moisturized. I guess the question I am asking is how does your hair feel if it is moisturized...I was just wondering about this because I have been co washing my everyday and then I put in ntm leavin, ntm heal in shine serum, and s curl on my hair and put a plastic baggie over my hair and keep it on all day and when I take the cap off just to see how my hair feels...it feels wet it looks kind of like a jerri curl and that is also how it feel....should I put the baggie on my hair all the time?...is this helping my hair or hurting my hair?...my hair is not breaking off or anything and I do this when I get alot of ng...

Tia,
Tanya

Tia,

Tanya the baggie should be a good way to hydrate hair and keep in moisture. I don't like this trick but LOTS of girls on here love it and do it nightly. I wouldn't wear it all day though...

Synthia, so the baggie should not be worned all day....do you think because the hair can become weak or something..because on the weekends and when I do not have to work...I wear a baggie over my hair allllllll day and I just started wondering is this a good thing....remember when you or someone you knew wore a curl...it seemed like their hair grew like crazy and it seems like my hair is growing by during this and it is not breaking off but I think I wil stick to during it at night because I always put my hair into a ponytail and put the ends into a baggie...I just started putting the baggie over my entire head.....

Thanks

I have to confess ... When I do this for just an hour during the day every now and then -- the moisture is insane!

But I just don't like preventing my scalp from breathing in fresh air and I don't like keeping my hair wet all the time, because yes wet hair is more easily pulled and broken and I don't want that risk.

Yes, I know bags are great for curls...as I used to wear a S-Curl when I was a kid  :look:

I just recently discovered that my hair doesn't like conditioner at all. That was the culprit to my main problem. HTH for those who experience the same.

Really, High Priestess? Do you not use conditioner?

;) Priestess, I notice that you were shocked. I know this is hard to believe, but my hair has improved in just a week and I wash every other day. It's getting stronger too.
I think that we put too much on our hair sometimes and unknowingly do more harm than good. At least that was the case with me. So I'm going back to basics and hopefully in time, I will on ocassion perhaps use conditioner only if I feel the need. However, I doubt it at this time.

Yeah, girl, I was surprised, becuase knowing my own head, it needs conditioner like a human being needs air and lots of it! When I don't give it enough or rinse too thoroughly, it gets dry and frizzy. :(

But congratulations on finding what works for you. That is so essential to any haircare journey, instead of trying to squeeze into the majority's perceptions and viewpoints on haircare. Just like the omnipresent LHCF school of thought, "What works for one doesn't work for all..." :look:

Anyway, again, congratulations on demystifying your hair and unlocking its secret code to happiness. :weird:

I had this problem until I began to clarify weekly. My issue was really product build up. My hair was limp, would not keep a curl, greasy.

I now truly understand the meaning of overconditioning. Last night I slept in a rich moisturizing conditioner and this morning even after shampooing, I was left with limp, heavy hair. Thank goodness with further rinsing and a little packet of Aphoghee Reconstructor, I was able to cheer my hair up again. I don't think I'll be sleeping in conditioner again. :ohwell:

What conditioner did you use? I've done this before and my hair seemed the same to me.

I have experienced the ill effects of over-conditioning twice when natural, i left my hair overnight with doo gro deep penetrating conditioner when i rinsed it out by the following afternoon, my hair was limp and i had a lot of breakage. On the second occasion i kept a conditioning cap on my head all the time and never allowed my hair to dry, so the temporary hydrogen bonds in the hair were always remained softened due to steam and when i came to manipulate my hair again i lost twice inches off my ends. The balance is moisture and light proteins,
