One Reason Some Products Might Work For Some and Not Others...PJ's get in here!

Hairsnob

Deep Thinker
You ever wonder why so many people rave about one product, yet others say they hate it? I always wondered what things people did differently to have such a different effect. Is it because they're natural, relaxed, use heat, no heat, etc. :look:

Well, I just posted recently how I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the HE LTR. I still do. :yep: BUT..... This week I washed and air dryed and did not use any heat in my hair and put in my normal products, including the HE LTR before and after it was dry and YUCK!! It made it feel crunchy when I put it on the dried hair :nono: (it wasn't bad when it was wet). Normally after a wash I would air dry, put in my normal products along with a little HE LTR and flat-iron. Then every day after that apply the HE LTR and it would do great on my hair with no reversion and no build-up or crunchiness.

So my theory is that some products may work better on heat users and vice versa. So I said hmmm, what other products do I have in my stash that I hated before and I could experiment with on my hair since it wasn't heat processed this week. So I dug out my NTM Silk Touch leave-in. And to my surprise, this time I actually liked it. :yep:

I just wanted to throw that out there in case you have some products you didn't like so well that you might try using a different way before tossing them.

HTH

Thank you so much for this post gives me a new perspective on my ever growing stash.

Luckily I have cousins in Nigeria who always appreciate donations from my pj stash but it does pain me to part with a $30 DC for the umpteenth time

LOL Yeah, your cousins may not be too happy now though

Everybody hair is different some people hair love heat and some don't, some love protein and others are protein sensitive and some hair thrives only with protective styling/low manipulation and some thrive w/o psing or low mani. It's all about knowing what your hair wants/needs and that is why some products I believe even though it get a lot of praise may not work for your hair particular hair wants/needs.

That is true. I'm newer to the journey of course but I have notices that diff products work dif on my hair depending! I find I have to do A LOT on my wet hair, that my hair responds better to low mani vs PS, and that I like dif products for dif reasons. I can use Mizani (for example) very well and consistently when I am entirely relaxed and using the entire line almost lol. However, with the transitioning styles, no heat, and low mani styles are better with my Bee Mine products, oils and DC DC DC!!!

Another thing to take note of, I get more of an itchy scalp when I apply "certain" products (cone-laden) without heat. I think because it seeps to your scalp instead of going into your strands.

Everybody made good points about how some things work better in different circumstances. It's a shame it took me so long to experiment and find out. Another factor could be the weather, some things work better in summer than winter.

There are many products I have gone back to and found that I love them.

For example, I just went back to Curls products. I used the entire line on my niece's hair, and was amazed at how the Whipped Cream just glided into her damp hair.

I then realized why it didn't work for my hair...I was using it on dry hair :nono:

A light bulb went on. Creams and lotion just work better for my hair - when used on wet hair. Butters...no!

This video came at the right time (SumKindaWndrful) about how using these types of products on wet hair work best. I needed moisture in my hair before I could put in a "moisturizer".

Yes, isn't it something the difference it makes?

Aw man! I can't view Youtube at work. But thanks for the link. Can't wait to check it out.

This is a good thread.

I know that I have to switch up my moisturizing Deep Conditioners when I stretch. What works on my fresh relaxed hair isn't all that great on my kinky new growth.

That's another good point.... how it can affect natural hair vs. relaxed.

Thanks!

There are some great points in this Thread. I'd Like to add my two cents:

1) Expectation -- Sometimes you expect 'more' from a product because you read all the raves, etc....and you expect it to perform a 'miracle' or you have your expectations set too high, OR didn't use it correctly and then you're disappointed and say it didn't work for you or you give the performance an 'unsatisfactory'.:yep:

2) Seasons -- I find my hair likes different thing in the Summer vs Winter and I will adjust products accordingly. In Summer I like more Creamier (Lighter) Moisturizers in Winter I prefer 'butter' (Heavier) based products.:yep:

3) Stretching -- For me, Being relaxed, I tend to use different things for week 1-8. After week 8 or so, I will make adjustments for NG and demarcation.:yep:

EXACTLY! It's so funny that whenever I read a recommendation for a product on here I don't even read the directions. I didn't realize my color rinse (Via) changed its formula and now requires you to use heat when it didn't before. I wondered why the color wasn't taking as well. Had I tossed that to the side and not finally read the directions I would still think it wasn't any good.

And making adjustments for the two textures seems to be a big thing in these responses too.

Another example of not using something correctly is when you refer a product to a friend. Say for instance a clarifying poo. You tell them not to use it all the time and they end up using it all the time because it worked so well and wonder why their hair is dried or stripped.

I viewed this video last night and that was very informative. I had no idea there was a difference in moisture and what a moisturizer does.

Thanks!

All of the ladies have offered excellent advice. T, as usual, has gifted us with her "hair" wisdom. If we are going to succeed on this hair journey, we have got to learn our hair's likes and dislikes.

Another important tip that I learned early on in my journey (probably from T or La Colocha :yep:) is clarifying my hair prior to using a new product. How can I get the full effect of a product if I have build-up for other stuff? The outcome will be tainted.
So I always introduce new products to freshly clarified hair, that way if I have a problem, I can pin point the source.

I agree. My hair can take conditioners with cones in them now that I blow dry semi-regularly. But when I was air drying exclusively, it hated products with a lot of cones. My hair felt so sticky and acted like velcro. That includes that Long Term Relationship, which caused the absolute worst case of velcro hair I have ever had.

I Thought Of Reason Four::look:

4) Consistency -- You don't use the product enough or in the manner it was meant to be used for to determine whether or not it is working for you. The expectation of instant results. e.g. *Porosity Control some people use it once or twice and expect that all their porosity issues will be solved in just 1 (or 2) applications.:nono:

I had to find this thread and bump it because I just revisited another product I forgot about.

Now that it's warm I went back to my Wave Nouveau Finishing Lotion and oh my goodness!! My hair drank that stuff up so quick it was ridiculous. :lick: My hair feels soooooo moisturized right now and I haven't had this feeling in ages (okay, last summer). But I totally see how dry my hair was all this time and didn't even think about it. So my regimen has to be tweaked because the HE LTR I was using is probabably not moisturizing enough.

That probably explains my lack of retention lately.

Happy Hair Growing ladies!!

moisture is what is added to dry hair
A moisturizer is added to dry hair as well.

I dont buy having to add water to hair in order for a moisturizer to work. If I add moisture and then add a moisturizer then my hair will be a wet mess. Moisturizers have water

A person has to find the moisturizer that has the perfect consistancy for their hair.

Rusk sensory smoother only works on my ends. I tried it on my entire head and the next morning it was if I didn't apply anything to my hair, on top of the fact my scalp is allergic to one of the ingredients ( I just found out).

Jessiecurl aloeba works well for me on dry hair. I apply allow it to soften my hair and then I manipulate. If I manipulate prior to allowing it to soften I get breakage.

Also people just use products incorrectly. Some products are better used with heat (Oil Moisturizers, serums, etc) and others you should NOT use with heat (Glycerin based moisturizers/leave ins, etc.). I would say read directions and ingredients carefully to determine the best way to use a product to yield the best results.

THIS!!!!!!!!!! I tell folks all the time...READ THE DIRECTIONS!!!! One person mixed up a bunch of stuff with bentonite clay and some other conditioner and it matted her hair up. I told her she was being hard headed, directions were clearly stated on the jar but she had to be miss fancy.

I've had some snafu's of my own too. Let's just say NEVER use rhassoul after using a protein treatment!!!!!!!!

I also learned that try one product at a time...well let me clarify. I try to leave one thing in my hair at a time so I know what works, what doesn't, and what my hair likes.

Another thing I'm thinking of is my bff who is relaxed. Her hair LOVES ors replenishing pak while my natural hair hated it. So I cheerfully tossed her my stash. She also uses heat with it and I don't use heat.
