A natural astringent and skin toner, it promotes black and luxuriant hair growth. It has a dual benefit of preventing hair loss and stimulating hair growth. A paste of this powder helps to prevent scalp infection and controls greying of hair. It can be applied to the face for brightening the complexion by removing pimples and grime from the skins. NOTE: FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY
Directions: Mix required quantity with water or oil to make paste. Gradually apply in between hair locks, on scalp and massage gently. Leave it on for one hour. Rinse off with water.

I use it. I mix it with my henna. The girl at the Indian store said it was very good for the hair. I've not used it alone, though and I didn't know about using it on my face. But I know that the one that I got can also be taken orally although I'm not sure exactly what it does. The girl at the store had some amla chewy things that she let me try and it had a funny taste.

I bet I was absolutelly no help at all...

I bought it cause the lady at the store said it promotes growth and can rid me of pesty gray hair:look:

Yeah how do you all use it? Paste? Mixture?

It was $1.99 so I figured i'd try? The box says I can also mix it into oils.

yes i bought a box at my local Indian store. I can't remember the exact price but it was somewhere around $1.59. I have used it twice...both times i mixed it with Henna, Vatika oil, and hot water. I can't testify for which ingredient has lessened my breakage, cause i've never used them solo. But this henna treatment has certainly curbed my breakage. Now my breakage is normal... i get a very small amt of breakage while detangling and rollersetting, previously i was starting to get worried that my hair was breaking too much... and my hair feels stronger. Yay, me!

I got the vatika oil. What brand of henna do you use?

I use it because I can't stand the smell of amla oil. I really like it. It can be messy to apply, but it's really good for your hair over time. It will also darken your hair very nicely.

I have Amla powder, and I made a hair oil from it with Shikakai (another hair benefical Indian herb) and Cayenne (to stimulate the scalp) I LOVE it. LOVE it. I use it in everything - in my henna, in my conditioner, and when I make some hair butter, I plan on using it there too.....

I might try some in water at some point.

I mix a little Amla powder in with my henna treatment. It is acidic and it helps with color release. It is also very conditioning. I have never used the oil for anything though, not really sure how they would compare.

Softresses

ETA: It gave me a darker color as well.

How long have you been using it Myco and how dark does your hair get?

I've used it off and on for at least 5 years. When I was using it regularly, my hair reached a really shiny deep brown/ black color. I have some naturally reddish brown strands and they all disappeared. It's hard to describe but it was noticeable enough for people to ask if I was dying my hair.

Thank you Myco. This amla powder seems pretty impressive.

i have only used amalaki powder and Fo-ti powder in my henna mixes. Amalaki powder is good for getting rid of gray and Fo-ti powder is good for retaining hair color.

So this is eqivalent to a color rinse? :) If so does it fade out if your a frequent/daily wash and go'er?

It is, but it takes a while before the effects become noticeable. So I just use it for the conditioning and strengthening. The darker hair color is a bonus.

Thanks for the info. I plan on getting a cellophane soon but I may purchase this to have on hand for future use. :)

I think I have some in the freezer, I have to try this as a paste. I loving the Amla oil.

My husband has been using Amla Oil and coconut oil for his scalp issues and it seems to have gotten better. No more large cornflake type things anymore.

I believe they make a paste out of it.

That's what I do. I usually use a whole box each time. I dump it into a bowl and add enough oil to get a paste. When it's smooth enough, I apply it with a tint/perm brush like I was applying a relaxer. I apply it at the roots first and then to the ends because it can be hard to seperate your hair once it gets on there. Then I just pin my ends on top of my head, cover with a plastic bag and go about my business. I usually leave it on for a couple of hours if not overnight.

It takes a while to rinse out. But afterwards I shampoo and condition as usual.

I use it, but I don't use that particular brand. I make a tea out of mine and use the tea as a rinse between henna treatments.

I would make a tea out of my herbs also, I never thought about making a paste.
