Ok, this is why mineral oil is ok in my mind...

This is my theory, and I'm certainly open to opposing veiws, but this is what I came up with.
I'm thinking that if mineral oil doesn't 'soak' into the hair but rather just 'sits' on the shaft, wouldn't it then be the best method of 'locking' in applied moisture as it would allow as little moisture as possible to escape? :ohwell:
I recently bought some products containing mineral oil and although it's only been a week, my hair seems to feel way less dry than it did when I was using evoo.

what gives? :look:

My hair does very well with mineral oil. I have amla which is basically mineral oil and my hair always feels soft after I use it. And my favorite conditioner Motions silk protein has mineral oil as the 2nd ingredient and it is by far one of the best conditioners I have used on my hair. My hair comes out smooth with less tangles and less breakage and shedding. I do use a mosituriziing conditioner before I use the silk protein though..maybe it seals it in ???

My hair does weel with mineral oil and other oils as well. I think it does lock in moisture. The problem I thnk lies when people dont have moisture to begin with and then it locks out moisture.

I agree with MsP, you have to go with what works for you. Over the years using products containing mineral always made my hair dry, dry, dry. I changed all my products and my hair thrives.. I also know folks whose hair thrives on nothing BUT petro and mineral..go figure.

Motions Oil Moisturizer and PM foaming pommade are some staples that never fail me. I think mineral oil is the second ingredient in both of these .

Stick with what works :yep:

That's it right there. Probably 99% of the time (imo). I stopped using it cause I knew I wasn't keeping my hair moisturized in the first place like I should've. BUt when I was little, products with mineral oil were staples for our hair and it was very healthy. Not because of the oil, but because my mom knew to keep our hair moisturized(weekly washings, etc.).

This is soo funny. I was just about to make a thread about this very same topic!!!

Anyway, I'm glad everyone says that mineral oil is okay, b/c I have been turning my back on my favorite hair dressing just b/c it had mineral oil in it. I have also been avoiding products b/c of the mineral oil in them and if a product didn't work, I blamed it on the mineral oil (i.e silicon mix) I was thinking about this is class today and was gonna start a thread asking if mineral oil is THAT bad.

So here's my other question, I have heard that mineral oil clogs your pores in your scalp. So I'm guessing that's why we are told to stay away from mineral oil?
So is it safe to say that mineral oil is fine to use as long as you don't get it on your scalp?

I also wanted to add that I agree that mineral oil only lubricates and coats the hair(no penetration) but I find that helps me reduce tangles and breakage. Its kinda like serums, which I love. I don't necessarily want or expect serums to moisturize my hair but it does smooth and coat the cuticle which reduces breakage for me.

Girl, my favorite headdress of all time is Keracare headdress and it contains mineral oil, petroleum and beeswax but my hair feels like silk. Its a headress yet my hair retains its freedom of movement and does not feel weighed down at all.People have been complimenting me non stop since I started using it. So whatever works, use it!!

I have been using mineral oil for years with no adverse results. As a matter of fact, my hair gets too dry when I don't use it. I usually just find a light oil/grease that often contains mineral oil on my ends. Because the oil is light it soaks in well and does not weigh down my hair.

I think this is the issue. I don't think it's bad for the actual strands, but when applied directly to the scalp, it can create problems. I know that my hair started growing faster when I stopped putting it on my scalp. I do think the mineral oil clogs pores/follicles and stunts growth.
Another friend of mine was having this AWFUL dandruff problem. She could wash her hair on Monday and on Tuesday she'd have a head full of dandruff. I told her that it could be a number of things, but she should first look at her relaxer and what she's oiling her scalp with. She argued that the mineral "oil" would keep flakes away, but I explained that the mineral oil is probably just sitting on her scalp creating flakes. Sure enough, when she stopped using it for 2 weeks, her dandruff came to a screeching halt. She was amazed and kept thanking me, but I was like, Girl please, that's a result of me doin research and listenin to otha folks (i.e. the beautiful heads on LHCF!)
I happen to prefer jojoba and other oils on my length, but I don't think the mineral oil is bad for the hair or the ends...it's just the scalp that frowns on it IMHO. :look:

Natural oils don't soak into the hair either, they have the ability to.

For instance if you applied olive oil to your hair, it will just coat the outside. The same with mineral oil.

If you were to add olive oil to your conditioniner, some of it would enter the shaft. If you did the same with mineral oil, it would stil coat the shaft and probably block some of the things that can be absorbed into your hair from getting in into your hair.

Plus, you're not getting any build-up of mineral oil out of your hair unless you use a sodium lauryl sulfate or stronger shampoo. That just gunks up your har and blocks the "good stuff" from getting in.

So imo, natural oils do the same job as mineral oil (if you need a heavier oil, use heavy natural oils like castor) without the funky build-up.

Still, that's my opinion... and mineral oil doesn't work in MY hair.

Some people have hair 4 times longer than mine and they use a bunch of mineral oil based products... funny.

Mineral oil is good for me. I use and LOVE the Capilo Sole & Cinnamon products...my hair has NEVER been softer. My mother keeps commenting on how soft it is...she says it's the softest it's been since I was a small child and that says a lot because I've always had really soft hair (even at it's dryest point it was still soft to the touch.) I also love the Clairol Vitapointe Hairdress on my ends! So yea...almost every single product I have, excluding the shampoo, has mineral oil in it.

I agree w/ this and would add that natural oils have nourishing properties for the hair while mineral oil does not.

I products containing mineral oil that I use work wonders for me too. I know that mineral oil is bad on skin, but I have not seen or read any evidence that its bad on hair. I wouldnt mind reading that literature if anyone has it. But for now I put it on my hair and not scalp. Mineral oil is among the things helping me keep moisture in my shafts:) .

I think there are a lot of valid points here. Everyone needs moisture but the key is how well your hairs RETAINS the moisture. If youre locking it in with somethign (usually an oil) then great but if youre locking it out (usually with a very heavy dresing or oil) your hair will dry out. Also whats good for hair isnt necessarily good for the skin and vice versa. You wouldnt put lotion on your hair just as you wouldnt put conditioner on as lotion.

Mineral Oil seems to have neither a positive nor negative effect on my hair in regards to products....and I dont use natural oils at all. Waste of my money.
