Hi Jan,

I read about your hair problems. First, let me give you some book suggestions. Seems like you have 4a texture hair and this type of hair does not do well with texturizers. Soo, you are doing a great thing by growing it out. Mr. John's Holistic guide for African American Hair. Call the salon at 313-345-4555. Mrs.D.Low shampoo system. http://www.dlowshampoosystem.com
This is why your hair is knotting. When AA hair becomes over moistruized. Now let me explain this, oversatruated with water and oil moisturizers. The hair then curls back on itself and knots. Soo, you are probably thinking how do I keep my hair from being dry. I thought moisture was good for 4a hair. Wrong!!! You need oil, oil, oil. Not things with water basing. Kemi oyl is a great way to get started. Once you knock out all the excessive moisture, your hair will become extremely manageable. I know this goes against everything that you have learned about 4A type hair, but believe me it works. Stay away from anything that says moisturizing. Hope this helps you and you can get your hair back on track. Please, get some of the Debreen from Mrs. D. Low. Your hair will thank you.

Again, this comes down to the individual. Moisture has turned out to be my hair's best friend.

Well, clearly this advice is not for me. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I totally agree with Pebbles.

Moisture is my best friend and I'd hate to see the state of it if I used just oil on my hair, it would look a mess, even if it was a light oil. Oil for my scalp is better that moisture, on my hair it would just sit and not absord or anything.

I wish people would stop writing advice for people like the 1 rule is the same for everybody.

exactly what works for 1 will not work for all. i wet my hair atleast 5x every single day and my hair loves it.

See, I keep tellin you guys that the Hot Comb Mafia is EVERYWHERE! One day when they come knockin on your door you guys will believe me! heh heh heh

If I listened to this advice I'd be bald by now. Moisture is the only thing that keeps hair on my head. Why don't these people join the 21st century and stop spreading such blatantly bad information??? Okay, maybe type 4 hair can knot itself up - I've seen some of my strands do this - but not moisturizing is the answer?!!! I don't think so. With any luck, Jan is also a member of this forum and sees the goldmine of information here, and will seriously reconsider this 'advice'.

The bad thing is that a lot of sistahs & brothas believe the no moisture from water thing and think people like us are crazy!!! But we'll show them when we all have hair down to our butts!!! LOL /images/graemlins/grin.gif

I agree. In evaluating my hair regime from the past I realized that I was not applying enough moisture and although my hair would grow, I would have to cut off so much when I needed a trim because it was drying out and breaking off.

All that we read we must evaluate for ourselves and our hair in particular. There is so much counter information (you read one thing and then another expert disagrees) that it is difficult and most people give up. I guess we must really sort out the information we receive.. /images/graemlins/crazy.gif

LOLOL I stole this term from you and I have members of my family using it. My teenaged cousins say their grandmother is a Capo in the Hot Comb Mafia. /images/graemlins/grin.gif This woman avoids water like it's battery acid or something!

These folks must be crazy!!! The worst thing I ever did before discovering that water=moisture was to comb my hair with new growth when it was bone dry. No wonder it was snapping off like dehydrated twigs. Moisture + oil is the only thing I do before gently combing. Where do people get this info????

/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Hahahaha that's hilarious. Well it's good to know I'm not the only nutcase out there.

I find that oil just sits on my hair.
What works for one, may not work for another.

why the crap would this person tell a black woman to stay away from moisture? What? doesn't oil kind of do the same thing in a sense? Isnt it not good to always oil your hair when u got braids in because it traps dirt and u start itching badly?(plus it'll loosen the braids) I mean...w-t-c?!?! is there a picture of this lady thats giving advice

I think (I hope

) that the 'no water' advice is for natural women who are trying to maintain a pressed style...

DITTO!!!

Yeah i see her hair. It looks fine, nothing special, sure nuff not long. How old is she? That looks like a pic back in the 50's or something. I also looked in the photo gallery talkin bout her on some plane in the 60's or something.

This reminds me of the Jheri Curl. Do you remember when the Jheri curls were popular? (I admit I had a curl) My hair grew so long from my curl, and almost everyone who had one grew long hair and this was due to the moisture. I don't believe that my hair would have grown so long from just oiling my scalp everyday.

Well let me just say from experience, that just using oil has left me with a head full of broken thin shiney hair!!

LOL!!! Moisture has been my best friend! My strands are plumper and smooth and shiney! I never wore my hair up until now, because it was so thin from using oils without moisture! I agree, what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another!

My hair would be a a matted dry mess if I did what they recommend. Oh, well. What works for some will not work for others but I dont think they should be giving advice like that b/c in my opinion its the minority of AA who have very oily hair.

I read this advice from another online source stating AA women need to stay away from water when caring for their hair. I believed it at the time because I didn't know any better. My hair suffered a major setback because of this disinformation. Now my hair looks and feels so healthy and lustrous and it's growing with very minimal shedding. I know for a fact it's because I am washing it 2x each week and sealing in that moisture.

Look at what this website says about natural hair
http://www.substance.com/honey/lb/article/0,,530581-3,00.html (you have to copy&paste I think)

Do wash your hair every three weeks. Use a gentle shampoo formulated to remove hair-dulling product buildup while also imparting moisture. Try Aussie Mega Shampoo ($3.99, Drugstore.com).

Don't live with that not-so-fresh feeling in between shampoos. But please resist the urge to wash it. Over time, the harsh chemicals in water can break down the hair follicle, making hair look lackluster. Instead, cleanse your mane with a no-H2O-necessary shampoo, like Klorane Oat Extract Dry Shampoo ($12.49, 800-RXCLYDES). Just run a dime-sized amount through hair, and, miraculously, you're left with fresh-smelling, clean strands.

If I had read that about a year ago I would probably follow that advice. This site looks legit and everything.

Maybe it's different for natural hair vs relaxed, I don't know. I did read of one woman on another board who washed her natural hair about once every month. And it was growing!

i don't think it's about any one method being right or wrong; it's more about whats working for you personally. i know i used to be one of those bi weekly washers and i had below shoulder length hair; but when i developed a scalp condition i had to re-think my methods... now i wash twice wkly. AND!!! i follow the advice of the LHCF!

i lost my point, ahhh well, just do whats best for you "." '

btw: glad to see you back LD; i just noticed... *S*

Are you guys serious? They're telling natural-haired people to only wash every 21 days. Over time, the harsh chemicals in water can break down the hair follicle making hair look lackluster. What harsh chemicals are there in water? Sites like this make me mad because their advice is so wrong. Yes, some people can get by without washing for a few weeks (but they are not the majority) but why are naturals different?

IMO naturals and AA hair in general need all the moisture it can get.

"Well let me just say from experience, that just using oil has left me with a head full of broken thin shiney hair!!"

You are so right. I had a protective style i guess u can say thjat i had for about 2-3 months and i left it in a wrap most of that time. So it stayed smooth and had str8ness to it and all i did was mainly oil it, but yet my hair STILL broke off and stayed the same old crapy length i got tired of that and about a month or 2 later i started being on this board and my hair is MUCH better.

So that's what causes single strand knotting. I've been doing searches trying to find what causes it, only to learn that it is common amongst Afro Americans.

Me too, Soulchild.

What makes me even madder is that there are thousands of women out there that have'nt been to this board or other sites and an may beleive that stuff.

Too many women that I come in contact with have no clue about proper haircare. Just the same old myths
