Oil Rinse: Did I do it right?

I saturated my hair with tea tree oil and let it sit for about 45 minutes (not under a dryer) and then rinsed it out. Then I put conditioner on it and am sitting under the dryer for about 30 minutes. I'll rinse that out and let it air dry overnight. Does this sound about right? I really had no idea how to oil rinse, but since everybody is raving about it,I decided to take a stab at it. I'm about a month and a half post relaxer so I'll have to do some serious flat ironing in the morning even though I HATE putting direct heat on my hair.

A carrier oil like coconut, jojoba, sweet almond, olive, grapeseed, castor etc., should have been used instead of an essential oil like tea tree. However you can put a few drops for an essential oil into a carrier oil and then do your oil rinse. Same benefits, but more cost effective.

I agree with Starr. Tea tree might be a little harsh when used straight. Try mixing with any of the carriers she listed. :yep:

Here's how I oil rinse:
  1. wet hair (you can poo first, if you want)
  2. apply oil
  3. rinse with warm water
  4. apply conditioner
  5. rinse with cool water
Actually, I usually start by putting conditioner on my hair when it's dry. Cover it and sit under the drier for 20-30 minutes then rinse and proceed with step 2 above.

I agree with trying another oil, the only ones I've used are Amla, Dabur Vatika and a mix of Amla, Vatika, and Brahmi oil. I normally do my oil rinse as my final step after rinsing my DC out.

Is there a thread around here listing the oils that are good for oil rinsing? I would hate for the ladies to start using any ole' oil and end up with hair that feels like a hot oil treatment. Oil rinsing seems to give a whoooole nother type of feel and benefit to the hair and I can imagine all oils won't work. Even though what works for some may not for all.
