Oil Moisturizers Clog the Hair Follicle?

This is my first post on LHCF, so I'm excited!

Yesterday I went to get a relaxer after stretching for 9 weeks. I was so proud of myself because I usually only do 6 weeks (thanks LHCF!). When my stylist put in the relaxer, she waited for 22 minutes and said my hair was taking an unusually long time to break down. Then she asked me what products I am using. When I told her BB Oil Moisturizer, she told me to stop using it immediately. Apparently, Oil Moisturizers, including the "pink stuff", clog the hair follicle and make it hard for the hair to break down during a relaxer.

I've used BB Oil Moisturizer for years and I have never had any stylist say something about it, but the owner of the salon also confirmed that oil moisturizers are no good. I'm a little sad because the BB Oil Moisturizer is one of the only things that really make my hair feel soft and moisturized (I usually put it on my hair with Natural Island hair oil and then do a full head baggie method). :crying3:

Has anyone else heard this about oil moisturizers?
What's another good moisturizer, in case I have to give up my beloved BB?
Is it really bad for the hair to be resistant to relaxing?

On a side note, they confirmed that NTM hair mask and leave-in are really good. :D

I relax my own hair ... and the day before I wash it to get rid of build up and put no products on it. The next morning I relax, with great results.

So, you might try going in for a relaxer next time with naked hair.

Anyone else heard about the clogging theory from oil moisturizers, though? I'd like to know too.

I know that vaseline (petrolatum?) on the hair makes it harder for the relaxer to get through. So your base should be vaseline free in case it gets on the new growth.

I agree with this. Maybe the less product on your hair the better?

Hehe...funny, before my stylists bases my scalp before my relaxer, I base MY OWN scalp with vaseline (especially on my sensitive areas around my hair line) since my hair is very fine. I get a mild relaxer, but still...it can wreak havoc on my hair line if I'm not careful, so I put some vaseline in my hair the day of my relaxer. HOpefully that slows things down a bit. ;)

I'm suprise to hear this about the oil moisturizer because I don't usually go in with a clean head (before LHCF). My hairstylist always grease my hair to the scalp before putting the relaxer in. She says she does this to cut down on the burning because putting the relaxer on a dry hair can burn the scalp.

I agree with this...always base your scalp... and would suggest that maybe the answer is for that week before your relaxer that you don't put as much oil moisturizer on your hair. Maybe wash it...moisturize and then leave it alone until touch-up day. I wouldn't wash my hair the night before and then go get a touch-up. You can irritate and scratch your scalp...which means you'll BURN the next day during your touch up.

As far as clogged pores... that can happen when you're using stuff with a lot of mineral oil and petroleum derivatives for an extended period of time. Its like putting liquid saran wrap on your scalp...scalp can't breathe.

They always base my scalp, so I don't think it was the base that's the problem...then again, I've never had a problem with BB Oil Moisturizer. It doesn't have mineral oil or petrolatum. Does the Pink Oil have mineral oil?

I wondered if there is something else that I used that was the culprit, but the owner of the salon was certain it was the Oil Moisturizer.

WoW!!! If I did that my scalp would be on FIRE.

I just looked up the ingredients for Pink Oil Moisturizer: Deionized Water, Mineral Oil, Lanolin, Beeswax, Petrolatum Sodium Benzoate, Sorbitan Oleate, Ethylhexyl Dimethyl PABA, Methylparaben, Propylparabean, Imidazolidine Ureia, Fragrance, Rede 33.

I can see why the hair stylist is against this one. The second ingredient is Mineral Oil.

I think she just assumed that the ingredients for BB Oil Moisturizer are the same, but they aren't: Water , Canola Oil , Sorbitan Sesquioleate , Castor Oil , Polyquaternium 32 , Polysorbate 80 , Aloe Vera Gel , DL Panthenol , Diazolidinyl Urea , Methyl Paraben , Propyl Paraben , Fragrance , D&C Red No. 33

Is Canola Oil bad for hair? I only know about if for cooking.

Well I was told not to use Castor oil or things that heavy on MY HAIR. Now as far as everyone else I don't know. I have fine hair so it tends to clog if I don't use something light. I tend to use my home made spritz or light almond oil. Maybe its time you use some recipes from LHCF and make your own. It was nice to actually know every ingredient in my moisturizer for once.
Just a suggestion.
