Now that I have length under control...how do I thicken it up?

I need as many ideas as possible. I'm currently considering Boundless Tresses.

What have you ladies done to thicken up your hair. I know I definitely need to trim about 2 or more inches off, but I won't be doing that until the end of the year. What else can I do?

Castor Oil mixed with daily moisturizer and Deep Conditioner
Internal Health: Protein, Carrot Juice, Vitamins, Water, Veggies
MSM, Biotin, B-5

Texlaxing, air drying, no heat, flax seed oil, scalp massages with essential oils

Protein treatments

I also think wearing braids & or weaves without doing routine treatments thinned out my hair. Your hair looks thicker than mine so this may not be the case in your situation.

I wore braids for six months and I know this compromised the thickness of my hair even though I moisturized and tried to treat my hair underneath as much as possible.

I hope this helps, I can't wait for all of you ladies to reveal your hair:grin:

This is exactly what i was thinking when i got my hair relaxed the other day. The length is progressing, but seems like every touchup my hair is thinner than the last time. Thanks trimbride, maybe i can try a couple of your suggestions.

Castor oil, biotin, and no heat has definitely helped me to thicken both my edges and my ends and also reduce my split ends.

How is this applied? Weekly, daily? Is the castor oil hard to rinse out?

I put about 2 parts moisturizer with one part castor oil. It is about 2 quarter size dollops in all. I rub together in my hand to thin out the castor oil and apply to my hair focusing on the ends.

When I use in my deep conditioner, I put about two tablespoons into my cheapie deep conditioner. I sit under the heatingcap for about 30-45 minutes then rinse. I don't add castor oil to my Aveda, but I do a prepoo sort of deep conditioner treatment using the castor oil:)

It isn't hard to rinse out

I hope this helps:grin:

I have been using and getting excellent results with JASON Thin to Thick. They have these products at Whole Foods. I got mine at my local health foood store. It has great ingredients and it tingles!! It says it guarantees 30% thicker hair with regular use. I don't know percentage wise, but I do know that my hair is noticeably thicker.

Texlaxing and leaving more curlpattern ,airdrying and no or very limited heat... all this made my hair thick:)
Oh I see trimbride already gave this as advice(and very much on point with it)

Thanks for the suggestions ladies. I'm definitely going to try the castor oil for a while and see what happens. I'm also going to incorporate more airdrying in a ponytail during this stretch.

This really makes sense :yep:, you are the perfect role model for thick hair :notworthy

Conditioner helps with frequent detangling and prevents excess shedding and breakage when styling. I will have to look into doing more cowashes in the future.

I would like to use Aveda but that seems to work best in conjunction with the shampoo.

A light protein conditioner would probably be good for me so that my hair doesn't get too mushy. Which conditioner are you using? A product recommendation from you should lead me in the right direction:)

i agree with the castor oil suggestions. i had been using that and my hair has thickened up. i also take vitamins and eat protein(drink it too). i mixed castor oil with my aveda brilliant conditioner, just a little and i love that! :D i think it helps with my natural hair and the humid weather. also using amla oil has REALLY helped the condition of my hair also.

Honeybadgirl- How do you use Alma oil? I have some and I tried it but the smell made my stomach do flips. What kind do you use?

I ask because I really need to thicken my hair up also and I hear Alma is the best thing to use.

Do you have to use the Jamaican Castor Oil or can it be any kind? How often?

I use regular clear castor oil, I mix it with my leave in to make it less sticky and easier to apply.

I think there is a thread comparing the two, for the most part I think the black kind is thinner and easier to apply (I have never tried the black kind). The regular clear kind that I use is thick but mixing it with creamy leave-ins solves any spreadability issues:)

I put this into my hair, I am experimenting with using it on my scalp.

What do you do with your ends when you are airdrying in a ponytail??? I've just been tucking mine under with a bobby pin. The ends are never straight or smooth when I do this though. I do get a big fat chignon though.

Are most of your who are are using castor oil, using black Jamaican castor oil or are you just using the stuff from the drug store? I have a big bottle of cold-pressed castor oil from the drug store, would this be sufficient?? Do you put it on your hair on a daily basis? Scalp or hair??

Sorry for all of the questions.

I think the ladies mentioned it all :) But here goes ---

Castor Oil added to your deep conditioner
Straight Arrow's Mane-n-Tail Original Formula Shampoo & Conditioner
Biotin
Pantothenic Acid / Vitamin B5
Conditioner Washing
Deep Conditioning with a ton of conditioner applied evenly through hair root to tip (Apply it as if you were applying a full relaxer to all of your hair)

That's all I can think of right now :)

Things that I've done that has helped thicken up my hair include:

-No heat/airdrying
-no combing between washes.
-Deep condition regularly(weekly) and moisturize daily

---I've tried castor oil(both regular and jamaican) but honestly, I don't think it helped significantly at all. Also, I find it very heavy. I stopped using it after about 3 months. I believe as you continue practicing healthy hair habits, the thickness will come as you continue to retain length.

All the ladies are on point with the tips the only thing I dont see is The Baggie.

I will add that the Baggie like anything else is not for everybody. baggying my hair actually made it thinner. Constantly having wet ends did nothing for my fine porous hair.

Some people's hair thrive using the baggy, if you are going to baggy keep a close eye on the results:look:

I trim my hair every time I do a touch up which is every 6 months to a year. This is what's helping me to thicken up my hair.

Nothing:look: I just let them hang and dry.

I'm fortunate not to have damaged ends, but I contribute that to not using heat regularly.

My staple conditioners are Praital Silk Worm rinse and Lekair's Cholestorol (sp). One of those two will be used as a base conditioner. Then I'll throw any cheapy conditioner on top of it to stretch it.

Then I apply a leave-in and I'm out the door!
HTH :)

Hi Trimbride

Are you using the Kids Organic Shea Butter Moisturizing Leave-In as your daily moisturizer? If not, what do you use as your daily moisturizer along with the Castor Oil?

ETA: I echo the sentiments of the ladies here and their great tips. I think thickening up the hair will take some time, but it will happen.

i ordered the unscented amla oil from fnwl. it doesnt really smell like anything. i use daily mixed with distilled water in a spray bottle. i just mist my hair daily and keep moving. once a week i may just put it all over my head and put a plastic cap on as a prepoo or sometimes mix it with the conditioner as a prepoo. this week is the 1st week in a while that i wore my hair out so i am really seeing how well it has worked for me!!:D my hair and ends seem so soothed...and softer! this week i was going to try something different and put the amla oil straight from the bottle on my hair like every other day and massage my scalp. just a pea size amount;)
