No straws!

I want to have curls like the ones acieved with straws but w/o the straws. I just can get those darn straws to stay in place! Does anyone have any sugestions? I tried the yellow rollers but the curls came out to big.

I just purchased the light blue flexirods to try them for a straw set. I didn't want to deal with the straws either. The light blue ones are about the size of a straw, maybe a little bit bigger. I have pics of a red flexirod set in my album.

Try those rubber flexirods, thats what I use. They make perfect curls. You can use the blue ones and separate the curls to make them smaller or use the smaller rods I think they're orange but you'll need more of them.

For natural hair, one strand twists do the job. For relaxed hair, keep using the straws but use bobby pins to keep the straws in place.

I don't know of an album, but I can give you a brief description of what I used to do:

1. Cut the straws to the desired length
2. Decide what direction to place the straws for my desired style
3. With wet, moisturized hair (products of your choice) I would section my hair (4)
4. From each section I would grab small sub-sections of hair to wrap around the straw.
5. Holding the straw upright, with the small section of hair, I would place the ends of my hair at the bottom of the upright straw.
6. Wrap my ends around and begin to roll my hair onto the straw in a downward motion while pulling tautly. I would then secure the straw either at by placing the bobby inside the straw and over my hair or clipping the straw from the side.
Clipping the straw from the side can cause an indentation, so only do this in areas where the strand won't be very visible. Clipping also takes up more space so, also only do this in areas where you can afford to lose space.

I just used a creamy leave in on dry hair (NTM). To do the straw I will use a little aloe vera gel for hold.

You start by rolling it like a roller (roll the hair on top of it self for at least 1-2 turns) then roll it up the flexirod like shirley temple curls.

To do small curls, you take a pinch of hair.

What products did you use on your hair for the flexirod set? Also, how do you roll the hair on the flexirod and how do you section the hair. Sorry if I am asking to many questions.

I love the curls you did with the rollers! What kind of rollers were those exactly? I normally use flexi rods or straws, but those rollers are cute. I might have to copy that! Anyways, if you don't want to use straws, then you could consider using perm rods, however, you curls will be much smaller, but still have that pretty spiral effect. In my opinion, straws are so much easier to use than flexi rods. At least with straws you can secure your hair with the bobby pin while using flexi rods requires that you twist the rod this way and that way, and then pray that it doesn't unravel on you. HTH.

You roll the hair onto itself for one or two rotations before you roll it up the flexirod. Then, you bend one end of the flexirods. You'll see when you get them. Its hard to explain.

Sorry, I dont know the exact name of the rollers but I bought them from wal-mart 12 for $2.00. I will try to see if I can find the name of them the next time I am there.

I've seen the flexirods in the BSS but didn't know how to use them. Also didn't know they could be subbed for straws; they look easier to deal with than the straws. Those pics you ladies posted with straw or flexirod sets look really pretty. My arms will probably hate me, but I'm going to have to try this when my braids come out later this month.

I think it's like those pretty coils naturals get with a rat-tailed comb and gel. (I did it for my brother and mother last year using the comb. They washed it out every 2-3 weeks and didn't let it lock up.)

Some do it to start their locs and leave it in until it locks up. I did a search and found finger twists and comb coils on the web.

Finger twisting:
Hair should be long enough to be twisted around your finger. A little more than half an inch is usually needed. After hair is washed and deep conditioned, part hair in small sections depending on how thick you want your locks to be, also taking into consideration that locks will thicken as they mature if you use this method. Adding a little gel to the section, twist it around your finger until a coil is formed and lay it into place or allow it to stick up. For a neater look metal clips can also be used to hold the twisted hair in place.

Comb Coils:
Comb twisting is achieved by using a small rat-tailed comb to form coils. This is usually done by a loctician and can be done on very short hair as well. A small amount of gel is put on the section to be twisted and the comb is placed at the scalp and the hair is twisted downward using the teeth of the comb.

Both of these styles should last from two to four weeks before being redone depending on the length of the hair. Shorter hair will need to be re-twisted in about two weeks. You want to keep the hair dry between grooming sessions or you risk the twist unraveling.
