No nasty brown gel

Ok, after reading CatSuga's post, I'm starting a petition against the nasty brown gel. Everyone sign your name.

I'm taking this stuff to congress, because this has to be stopped.

I'm tired of hard, flaky, funky hair all as a result of this menace.

I'm tired of stylists thinking that the only way they can get our hair to stay is by using 3/4 of the economy sized tub on our heads.

I'm tired of seeing sista's with bald spots on they heads because they tried to comb that mess out with a Goody comb.

I'm tired of spending 1 to 2 hours under the dryer just to get that stuff to dry on my thick hair.

We have been hoodwinked, bamboozled, runamuck and lead a stray. I have a dream that one day sistas of all hair textures can go to the hair stylist and come out with free flowing hair not bound by Stylin Gel singing "Free at last, Free at last, thank God almighty we're free at last."

this is my confession:
my name is msportugal and i still use nasty brown gel on my daughters edges its the only thing that works, at times i use it on myself. it doesnt flake so i use it still

I like some of those brown gels for laying down those pesky edges...

but using it all over... hell naw.

Hahaha,

I also have a confession...

There are only TWO brown gels that I'd still use...

Kera Care Styling Gel-Used this for my short cropped relaxed cut. Doesn't get hard

Fantasia IC Thick n' Shine-Use this recently as a natural to do my slick backed low pony puffs (never used without some type moisturizing product like shea butter based pomades)

They aren't flaky and the Kera Care one is actually very conditioning.

So now the truth comes out...

Using brown gel IN MODERATION is not a total evil, but using it in the ways that are mentioned in the op; NO!

That sounds about right...because I only use VERY little when I do use it. Plus, those really cheap no name one's I'd for sure stay away from.

This thread is funny...

I'm with you uncut...I HATE brown gel with a passion. When I was in middle school, my stylist use to use it on me to create what she referred to as "baby hair" Ugh!

Ampro (the folks who make the brown ickyness) make a clear version of the gel that's called Clear Ice, and it's not NEARLY as bad. It washes out much easier and dries soft instead of hard. But I don't even use that.

I prefer butters & pomades for smoothing edges. Hair sticks like the one TIGI makes (The Hair Stick for Cool People) are WONDERFUL for taming edges without creating a gooey buildup, and they usually last a long time b/c a little goes a long way.

GREAT thread, uncut!

That brown stuff is the worst! I haven't used it since junior high school and I still haven't forgotten the flaking, itching, and breakage.

To each her own! Don't nothing lay my edges down like ampro brown gel!

After seeing Catsuga's pics, I know that the 'stylist' went waaaayyyyyy overboard with the sticky icky icky brown gel!!!

Brown gel is my hair's enemy. I had a stylist use it on my hair years, years, years ago for prom. I had my mom wash that mess out the very next day. My hair was so hard, I was sure if anyone touched it, it would snap right off like a tree twig. Gel (pretty much any kind of gel), and my hair just don't mix.

I had the very same experience. Although it looks good and stays in place, it does not feel good. I always hated taking my hair down the day after prom...

will have to try this!

I thought brown gel went out of style when Waves did, lol, I haven't seen this crap since I was charging $15 bucks to do waves in my mother's kitchen, :lachen: , I'm a Let's Jam girl, smells good and doesn't get all hard looking. But I guess if you know how to use in the way that works for then slap on, slap on.

This had me LMAO:

Preach on my sista, preach on...power to the people...:lachen: :lachen: :lachen:

Lordy, lordy, lordy....I remember the days of the brown gel and all the aggravation that came with it, but at the time I didn't learn my lesson. The last experience I had with it was when I decided to do finger waves (way before I knew how to take proper care of my hair) and I had ALOT of breakage...As of this point in time, that brown gel is one of many products that is my hair's kryptonite!

I used to have that brown gel stuck in my hair to slick it up into a phony pony near the top of my head. I could never understand why my hair was so short I could pull the sides and back of my hair down from the pony tail, but my hair that was right at the top of my head bunned up in the ponytail was getting longer and longer. :look:

Humph! For comb coils, brown gel it is. LOL!

Never even knew about it during my relaxed days in h.s. and college. Saw it for the first time when my stylist did comb coils on my natural hair. Fortunately, I do my own now and the way I combine it I have soft CHEAP hold.

I have plenty of students with the brown gel baby haired bald edges. I think the balding came first, brown gel later. The gel is purported to help with growth and for me it always has (is it the protein?) It's the one cheap commercial products I keep on hand.

Sings. . . "All I am saying, is give brown gel a chance!" (a la John Lennon's classic)

I gave it a chance sister... it is good for wrapping the hair, and the texture is nice once you break through the gel, but that is the key BREAKING through the gel.

I remember when I was in middle school, my mom would put the gel on my hair and put it in a wrap and then sit me under the dryer until it was dry to the scalp (a process that took the better part of 1.5 hrs) and then I'd have to comb that mess out.

It hurt!! Getting that nice bone straight and soft look was not worth it.

Ya'll so ghetto....ummmmmhmmmmm using brown gel n stuff
LOL!

I stopped using brown gel when I saw the glear gel. Been using clear gel ever since.

But i am slowly evolving the use of hair taming concoctions.

Now I've dabbled in the waxes and pomades and butters...ohhhlalaweeweefeefeesheeshee and all that good stuff...

But yeah, brown gel and grease are like no no's

OH OH OH!!

I JUST HAD A BROWN GEL GHETTO PONY TAIL FLASH BACK!!!

'Member when you used to take that track for your weave pony tail and slick brown gel all over it and put them in rollers and stick it in the microwave to dry and it would come out all crunchy and bouncy?

Then you would use the brown gel and slick your hair in a ponytail high on your head and then wrap the track around that nub of hair you called a pony tail and then use bobby pins to hold it in place??

YA'LL MEMBER THAT?

OH WEE MAN! SHOCK YO DRAWS....I DO!!!

Okay now the rest of ya'll have to tell your brown gel memories!

I know we got some baby hair and toothbrush residents in the house!!!

but what about the freeze? you know your get your hair all slicked with brown gel and waved then sit under the dryer for about an hour then she takes the end of a rat tooth comb and lifts the waves so you look like kid and play? i used to cringe at the sound of my hair snapping and uncrunching as she lifted it and it hurt too. but i thought i was cute, running from thread to find some FREEZE pics to post
