I had a huge set back. I had in micro braids because I am in school. I wass about an inch and a half away from BSL hoping the low manipulation would BOOST me. I gained a whole inch judging by the roots but when i took them out and looked at my length it was a disaster. I was bare APL. so now I may need to cut it back to SL
im soooo mad. THIS i why i DO NOT LET PEOPLE touch my hair. every single time i come from the salon something is wrong with my hair

Awwww its ok :hug2:

We've all been there, just breathe and think about all the new styles you can experiment with, with your new length. Its going to be extremely healthy and certainly beautiful. Embrace the positive and let those hair demons slip you by because its nothing but progress from here :).

what exactly went wrong?
I'm not sure. from the roots i measure about an inch of growth before I took it out and i was soo excited. I took them out one by one. yes one by one using the tail of a rat tail comb and my fingers. had massive shedding issues which was expected. I checked the shower from when I washed my hair. not a lot of hair coming out. My ends are EXTREMELY thin and see through. When i got them done I noticed at the last minute htat she was KNOTTING THEM, which i had never experienced before since i never get braids. she was knotting MY HAIR

i think when it comes to healthy hair micros cant even be considered because they put so much strain on the hair follicles - box braids are a much healthier option, OP you should really consider becoming a DIYer

Once you get to a certain length, I wouldn't mess with micros. Most braiders aren't willing to go past the length of your hair, so its not really a protective style.
And if your ends are still out and the braider has either glued, or knotted your hair to secure the braid you are SOL.

It happened to me and I was only neck length. She only braided my micros about 3 inches down and used nail glue to secure it. That was before I knew any better.

What was your regimens while wearing them .. Ive been wearing mines for 2 months and plan on keeping them in another month..hoping all goes well since my hair was not knotted past my hair :-(. I took out one braid today it was fairly easy I looked to have about an inch of new growth 8-9 inches ...but breakage which I believe is due to a sew in I had before getting my breads...

i agree COMPLETLY with Kay. Dee i went throught the same thing i got micros 1 time, and that african lady jacked me UP!!!....i was about shoulder length then and i was neck when i took down....she had glued my hair like 3-4 inches up, my hair was a thin broken off mess. Please learn to do your own twists and braids (i have) it saves you alot of heart-ache later....Im so sorry OP it will grow back

I'm so sorry that happened to you. Fortunately, your roots are still intact, and while it will be a hassle to cut back to SL, at least you don't have to go any shorter.

Wishing you well, OP.

You've made the right choice. Bright spot is you're not at the point of no recovery.

After years of wearing micros, a cousin of mine has 0 edges!!! The suggestions to become a diyer are on point.

I've come to realize that even though I love the look, I can't wear them at all. I've had problems with them several times in my life, yes I've had the ends glued or knotted but my braiders always knew to braid past my own hair, because I always requested it. My problem came from the weight of the extensions. Even with regular moisture and cleansing, my hair is too thin naturally to support the extra hair. Now I wear mini braids off and on with my natural hair and it's thriving. The thread on natural mini braids is helpful.

You will recover from your setback a little wiser this time. It's all trial and error. Good luck.

You have to be very careful with micros. I wouldnt do them at all past SL, especially if done by someone else. 9 times out of 10 they dont know how to deal (or want to deal) with braiding that far down since the style takes so long to begin with.

Small box braids are the better choice for those with lengths past SL IMO. And I pull the ends so they taper rather than tie, glue, or burn them. That way there is no damage to the natural hair for longer lengths, and they dont unravel.

Sorry this happened to you. We have all had our setbacks, so just baby your hair and you will make it back to your goals in no time!

I do my braids myself. I never knot my hair or use glue, however. I bond mines with spritz (pump it up spray). I've never had a set back or anything. Also bc I do mines myself, I can gage how tight to put them in. I'm sorry this happened to you.

I wouldn't recommend micros for anyone relaxed or natural. There are so many opportunities for breakage from when the braider puts them in to the take out process. You'll get back to BSL in no time. Keep your spirits up! :)

i personally have not had much luck with extensions big or small. I always have a set back when i take them out.

I've pretty much been in Braids for years, but not micros. I've found that it's the best protective style for me and I learned to do them myself, so that after they are initially put in by a GOOD braider, I can redo my edges and other sensitive areas. Also, braids are very drying, so if you're not spraying them and washing them properly, you're hair will suffer.

If I had done a better job of taking care of my hair when it was out and not relying on beauticians I would be past WL at this point. But, I'm starting over now and you can do the same! :yep:

my cousin did micros and lost her hair too.

ive only done médium braids but didnt retain.(i never dc,moisturize nor sleep with à scarf)...

i have fine hair and would love to try again. j do them myself too because everytime ive been to à hairdresser i ended up with hair loss. they say ok to what you told them but then do oposite usé glue, knot etc... too tight...etc.

please i advise you learn doing them yourself. this will be the best thing for you. ! i hate doing hair and i am so happy i forced myself to.learn.

I've been wearing braids for years and I've never had that problem. But I've heard of people losing a lot of hair, especially when they take them out. But I do my own braids I don't like people touching my hair at all. I don't trust it. It really depends on how tight and/or small the braids are. My edges are braided very loose or not at all. I'm sorry you lost so much hair

I've been wearing braids for years too, and I'm a DIYer. I Don't do micros. I did them once myself and my hair was ok, but I figured that was too much stress on my hair so I didn't do them again.

Now, one time I went to an African braid shop and these braids weren't even micro, just individuals with the wet and wavy hair. Those girls took my hair out! As I was taking the braids down I noticed they used very thin pieces of my hair and blended in A LOT of the other hair. They were pretty tight, and also did that little knotting method. When I finished taking my hair down it was so thin. No progress at all. I NEVER have these problems when I do my own hair. The only time I go to braid shops now is for cornrows. I went back in May until around July. I didn't have any problems with those.

The twists in my siggy, I did those myself. My hair has been thriving and I have been retaining a lot!
