With the exception of when my hair is braided, I've been getting my hair blown for about 10+ years every week. I can't see life without my hair being blown straight. I'll do a bun here and there but my hair is usually out! I read so many of you ladies' posts and it amazes me! ???

how often do u use it? I barely had any hair when I used heat regularly.I guess Some ppl just have more durable hair than others...yours is very nice so u must be doing something right...what is your regimen?

Well what is the texture of your hair? Is it very thick? I'm assuming since you are in NY too that you go to the Dominicans for your blowouts. For me I don't need the blow dryer because my hair is fine. When I go to the Dominicans weekly I just have them wrap my hair after they take the rollers out. A few hours left like that and when I comb my hair down it is perfect and straight. You can check out my album of my blowout. It wasn't even blown. But I don't think this will work on thick hair. When it gets around touch up time I only let them blow the roots and then they wrap it. I NEVER let them blow my hair to the ends.

ChocolatePrincess, you should give it a try! Before I gave up heat, I thought the same thing (because that's all I ever knew). The major key for me was finding the right products that worked with the air drying routine. Also the nice thing about it is that it's completely beneficial to your hair so you have nothing to lose.

Girl, I use to be you until I learned the value of rollersetting and a good hooded dryer with a "cool" setting. I now wash twice a week, rollerset and sit under that thing for 3 hours on cool -- if in a hurry, i dry on warm for one and a half hours (I get ALOT of reading done!). It is soooo worth it, my hair has grown longer, thicker, shiner, bouncier, etc. etc. to the point where my very own mother can't believe how nice my hair is -- never was this long when I was little! Anywho, the RESULTS are what impressed me after experimenting for about 2 weeks. I very very reluctantly give up the blow dryer, kicking, screaming and in total disbelief, I thought, this won't work on MY hair, but, BEHOLD! and the rest is hairstory . . .

Giving up heat is definately one of those things where you just gotta do it to believe it . . .

BTW, I have what I perceive to be course, resistant 4b hair

Every weekend I'm in the beauty getting my hair blown. My hair is thick and even thicker when I need a touch-up. I tried wrapping my hair after taking the rollers out LORD HAVE MERCY my hair was a bush.

I'm in the same boat as you, Chocolate... Even when I airdry my rollerset at home I can't help but blow my roots a little cuz my hair is just too thick not to, and my sets are just a waste of time if i don't. I absolutely love the look that I get with a little heat, but I love the way my hair feels when I just airdry. But if you don't mind wearing your hair in a ponytail I would suggest airdrying in a ponytail with a magnetic roller on the end to keep the length straight (I usually put my hair in three ponies cuz it's not quite long enough to get every strand into one) and wear it in a pony. Or if you want, after you take the ponytail out, use a ceramic flat iron to smooth out the dent that the ponytail scrunci leaves and then wrap your hair and, viola! you will have a nice soft bouny do!

Just experiment a little the next time you have extra time.

Thanks. I have been doing my own hair as well as others since I was in like the 5th grade i.e. braids, relaxer, etc. but once I started going to the beauty parlor I got lazy. I'm going to get a few phony ponies once I'm done with the braids in August. Lord I'm getting an anxiety attack as I'm typing this just thinking about not going to the beauty parlor!

ugh, I'm with you Chocolate. I've tried the no heat thing SEVERAL times and it doesn't work for me at all. (And my hair texture is medium 4a!) It takes WAY to much time, and I like wearing my hair down. Plus, I absolutely HATE HATE spending longer than 2 hours on my hair. I'd rather blow dry in 10 minutes, flat iron and be out! My hair's been doing very well with this regimen. I get a trim every 4 months and only go to the stylist when I need a touch up. You can use heat if you use the right products to protect it against it.

It's unfathomable when you first think about it. I didn't think it was possible for me to live w/o a blowdryer at the very least, b/c I knew I could get my hair pretty straight w/it alone. But the thought of letting it go too was crazy. 15 weeks later.... I ain't lookin' back. It can stay on the floor forever and that

flat iron might as well go to the Good Will.

No matter how your hair looks and this is for anyone, the quality of you hair is going to improve once you stop using heat. Be it thickness, vitality, added length... whatever form it comes, it will be increased. ChocolatePrincess, your hair looks great now, just think about how fabulous it's going to look if you release the heat. Ohmigod!!!

You've got me excited!!!

Even if you use less heat or heat less often you'll see benefits.

Before I cut my hair it grew to the bottom of my bra strap and that was from blowing it every week. So I'm figuring if it aint broke don't fix it! Maybe I'll try no heat when I get a fresh perm but after a few weeks I need that heat!

For me it's just plain ole laziness. Especially in the summer. I just CO wash in the morning, put it up in a loose bun, get dressed, jump in my car and roll the windows down. I airdry it that way!

It's good to know there are ladies still out there who like the HEAT! I have curling irons and flat irons but I don't really use them but I keep them just in case!

Quick question! Tried to pm you but it said that you weren't accepting pm's. You seem to have similar hair to mine and I also want to start doing more rollersets (I've long given up heat) as soon as I take these cornrows out tomorrow. WHat products do you use or find that work well w/ your sets and your hairtype?

I use to have a hair dryer but I left my girlfriend hold it and never saw it again. I didn't really use it and I guess that was out of pure laziness. I still have the rollers so maybe I'll buy a new hair dryer or maybe I'll just go over to CaramelHonee's house and use her hair dryer!

My hair really loves nexxus products, specifically, therappe shampoo, humectress conditioner and headdress leave-in -- I ALWAYS get a good result with these over 10 years no matter how much I abuse my hair! I do use other stuff now that I'm doing things like condition washes. I use sauve, vo5 and thinner type conditioners for my CWs.

But my rollersets come out great with nexxus headdress and giovanni direct. I'm slowly beginning to realize that using the giovanni only during warmer months gives me better results than the headdress. The giovanni is a bit lighter and somehow keeps my hair smoother and frizzless during humid days. However, when I need greater moisture, headdress is the answer. I use both very sparingly from roots to end, just enough to light coat hair, then follow with a drop of rosemary oil to seal. Then I rollerset and dry.

I to once thought that I couldn't live without heat and now i've learned that I can. Before I would blowdry my hair and bump the ends with a flat iron and then just wrap everynight. Now I really dont like the straight look so I wach my hair let it airdry in two buns and before I sleep I spray some wonder 8 oil and twist into 6-8 bantu knots. In the morning my hair is completly dry, moisturized and wonderfully wavy.

Airdrying does take time but I usually wash my hair when I know i'm not going anywhere so I have time on my hands. In the event that I do have to go somewhere I'll put my leave-in and comb my hair into a curly ponytail (my hair gets super curly when wet) and let it dry that way. I agree no heat may not be for everybody but I think you should give it a try and see how you like it. You may find that you can do it after all.

Well, ever since I went natural, I've never really seen a reason to do heat. I think the fact that I was committed to learning how to style my hair without any heat or the help of a stylist was key.
smile.gif
The longer I go without it, I don't understand the fixation/need/desire to have/do it. It's weird, but that's how I honestly feel.

Sigh! I've tried that so many times! See, I would love to beable to wash and air dry. My problem is my hair DOES NOT look cute when wet! There's not curl to it whatsoever. Then to top it off Air drying = MAJOR SHRINKAGE!
antlers.gif
In order to combat that, I'd have to put a heavier leave in and probably some oils, but I HATE HATE HATE the feeling of heavy hair. I'm used to putting only a serum on my hair and anything more than that feels HORRIBLE to me.

So yeah! My hair's been doing very well. As I said before I think it has a WHOLE LOT to do with the products I've been using. Also I use a ceramic flat iron which has actually made a HUGE difference. I think that the flat iron works in conjunction with Biosilk Silk Therepy to seal the ends, because I haven't seen split ends for months (and I used to have a big problem with that.)

Anyway! I'm not hatin' on the no heat girls. I think it's wonderful to beable to do that. Unfortunetly, it just doesn't work for me! I'll try and post pictures soon. Ha! Ya'll should see the pics of a braid out a tried to do.

That was my last attempt at the no heat regimen!

Me too! I think I'm going to actually trash my blow dryers.

Chocolateprincess your hair is beautiful and the braids are really nice. I live in NY too can you tell me where you got the braids done.

no heat works fines with me..LOL..after i went thru my hair cut phase n my hair grew back i wondered why i got so much breakage and was afraid that i would have to cut again.. my friend said. "No heat, less relaxing" .. and by george the crazy broad was right.. I dont do heat unless i have to.. other than that i'm an air dried girl..

It was hard for me to get rid of using heat. The main heat I got rid of is curling and flat irons because they have made me have thin, see-through ends. I still use a hooded dryer sometimes when I rollerset but I usually let it airdry if I have time. My hair feels much better when I airdry a rollerset(soft & moisturized opposed to crispy and dry). I sometimes use a blowdryer w/ a comb attachment when I dont have time. But since I started the bun challenge last week, I have no need to use heat at all. I just put my hair into a wet bun and let it airdry and keep it in the bun. This method has helped me achieve thickness and makes my hair feel great!

I thought my thick hair would always have to be blown straight. I gave up heat in Dec 03 before I came to this board. I could tell the difference in my hair after one month. Initally it was hard. I started by letting my wrap air dry and then using the flat iron to smooth it out. Then I decided to experiement with styles other than a wrap. Before I knew it I had gone two months with no heat. Now here I am 6 months later and I don't even miss my blow dryer. As a matter of fact I gave it to my husband a week ago to dry our puppies after a bath!

Unfortunately my hair doesn't curl up when wet, although I wish it did. Come August when I take my braids out and get a touch-up and I'll try to do less heat.
