Hey All,

I have been lurking here for a couple of weeks now and just decided to join. I have been looking for a forum like this for a long time now and was happy when I found this site.

Let me first apologize for the long post:)

My hair is 4a when relaxed. In August of last year I had highlights put in and now thy are breaking out (I really just want them out now, it was a big mistake).

I started relaxing my hair for about 3 years now. At first my hair was full of life, thick, and bouncy. Now is has thinned out a whole lot. My problem is not that my hair won't grow, it is that it is thin.

I am looking for a way to improve this. Up until April of this year I was going to a salon just about every week. I was never really happy with how my stylist was doing my hair, but I guess I was just too lazy to try someone else. However just as I was beginning to look into the possibility of changing stylists, we had a falling out so that made the process I whole lot easier;)

Now I have no where to go. I recently tried a Dominican salon, and while they did a good job, I was not very comfortable with the cleanliness of the salon, so I have to find somewhere else. My problem lies with the fact that I have never done my hair myself ever. Not even when I had natural hair so I really dont want to start trying now (could be out of fear).

I am going to start taking prenatal vitamins to see how they can help me achieve my goals.

My last relaxer was April 28,2007 and I wanted to stretch it until September.

I guess my first questions are:

1. Does anyone know of a good salon in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area? Preferably one that deals with hair care and maintainace.

2. What should I be doing in the meantime between relaxers? I don't wear braids due to the fact that they make my hair thinner when I take them down. I only roller set now, due to the fact that I think the flat iron was one of the reason for the demise of my hair

3. What do you suggest in getting my hair thicker.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Bless
TB

What are you using to moisturize with? Moisturizing daily is key. When your hair gets dry, it usually start to break off. I use Keracare and S-Curl, but there are several good moisturizers that you can use. Maybe one of the other ladies can chime in. Ladies....????

welcome tyrablu :)

Ok, the quick version of Hair Thickening 101;

Try deep conditioning your hair (leaving it on for more than 10 minutes) with Protein at least once a week.

Use as little heat as possible!

Try to stretch your relaxers for as long as you can (preferably 10-12 weeks)

Drink lots of water and take your vitamins (Biotin, flaxseed oil and MSM have been getting rave reviews)

Stop brushing your hair. Use only wide tooth combs.

Henna is your best friend :-)

Thanks for all your responses.

Well I haven't really been using anything for the simple fact that my hair is very fine and heavy products weigh it down. And when it gets like that it is difficult to manage and it breaks when I try to wrap it at night. I just tried the BioSilk silk protein leave in moisturizer and I think I like it .

I may be ignorant but what exactly is henna? I have heard it menioned on this site many times but I have no clue what it is. If someone could answer this I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks again for everything.

Welcome! There was a thread started about salons in the South Florida area.

HTH.

In the meantime, the advice I can share which best helped me is: Make sure you deep condition with every shampoo using extra virgin olive oil or some other type of oil is great for dry hair. Try protein txts like Aphogee or Nexxus Emergencee. Make sure you use a light oil to seal. Ive found that using castor oil sparingly works really well and I shed like a dog. Happy Hair Growing!
