Hi Ladies! I have been a lurker of LHCF for about 5 months and just couldn’t resist the continued urge to join. In the past, my hair has been my worst enemy. I had no clue how to take care of my relaxed hair and was constantly abusing it with bonded hair weaves, relaxer box kits, blow dryers and flat irons. It repaid me by a snap, crackle, and pop right onto the floor. It isn’t surprising that I could not retain any length. My hair never seemed to grow past the nape of my neck or barely shoulder level.
Earlier this year, I was in a new city and thought I would try my hand at transitioning. The mixture of bad products and no research led me straight to a new stylist with a tangled, matted mess that I called my hair.
During the relaxer application process, the stylist pulled, tore, and yanked my hair until I was almost in tears from not only physical pain but also from seeing the strands fall onto my cape and onto the floor. While blow drying, [the stylist] ripped more and more pieces of my hair from my head. I left the salon with an almost shoulder length blunt cut with my front sides the length of my chin (remember the mushroom cut?).

It was at that moment that I decided that I had to change my hair care practices and truly nurture my hair back to health and hopefully the length would come.
After weeks of reading, reading, and more reading, I began checking product ingredients, learning how to maintain a good protein/moisturize balance (haven’t completely mastered), deep conditioning techniques, using low manipulation styles and much more. I air dry only and hardly ever use combs because I rely solely on my fingers to detangle and style. I have started finding and using products that work well with my fine tresses and aid in stretching my relaxers to 16-18 weeks
; it is so easy now that I can’t believe that I was previously relaxing every 6-8 weeks. My awakening was about 8 months ago and I am finally starting to see a little growth and my hair has thickened quite a bit. My ultimate goal is to have healthy BSB (BSL is in the same area) hair within 2-3 years (I’m a 5’7” slow grower with the longest torso ever
) but I’m hoping that I can reach it before 3 years. My only hair goal for 2010 is healthy APL and I hope that I can make it without any major setbacks since I only need about 2” or so, but a definite trim. I had my hair recently relaxed by my childhood stylist and when she said that my “hair is the LONGEST it has EVER been,” I knew then that I am now on the right track. I hope that I can continue to say that.
Thanks for reading!!
