okay, I'm gonna do it...I tell ya I am, I want my natural hair:)

My folks were in Target the other day and apparently saw a girl with almost waist length hair that was "just like mine" they asked her about it(my parents know and understad my obsession with hair) and she nicely told them she was almost done growing out her relaxer and she goes to a lady every week who presses her hair and she has lost none during the transition, she also gave them her number to give me...

No I'm not sure If I will go that route, or maybe just go less, but the point is I have one trouble spot in my head that I want gone, and I want to see my natural hair so these are my resolutions on 2004:

1)No red meat(already done...easy), maybe one day chicken as well.
2) No relaxers in my hair
Then there's my GPA, but that a whole new thread on the OT board

Come on my sisters...joing me!!! (ok now I'm embarassing myself), but transitioners sign in and let us know how it's going!

Re: New transies thread, say no to chemicals in 20

P.S. Hope I didn't offend anyone with the title..sounded like a cool line!!

Re: New transies thread, say no to chemicals in 20

I understood...

I became natural a few weeks ago(cut off the last bit of permed ends)...and honestly...my hair has grown faster since the beginning of my transition...that it has ever grown in my whole life....It was the best decision for me...

I have already seen quite a few threads on this forum for individuals who are beginning their transition too...so whether they respond to this thread or not...you are not alone...

It sounds like you have thought this through...enjoy learning about your natural hair...experiment to find out which conditioners and products work for your hair...

It may get frustrating at time...but you wont regret it.

Best wishes.

Re: New transies thread, say no to chemicals in 20

Hi, ladies! I started transitioning in feb 2003. I had a lot of issues w/ tangle during my 3rd and 4th month but ever since I started using Surge(in a rosemary eo spritz)my hair seems stronger and doesn't "tear" when I braid my hair 4 a braidout. There is this one lady here at work, who is gettin' on my nerves about my new growth: "You didn't get a chance to do your hair today?" i like it and that's all that matters.

Good luck to the rest of the transies!

I am not transitioning but I am stretching out my relaxer to 6 mos. But I wanted to say I feel ya on those unwanted comments Bee. I wore a braid out to church on Sunday and one lady said to me "did you stick your finger in a socket" .. and a couple of sunday's before that when I pulled my braid out style into a bun and put chop sticks in it another lady said to me "I haven't had a chance to go to my hairdresser what's your excuse?" They just don't know how close I was to saying something unholy. But this Sunday I had to say something. I told her that just because I do not wear my hair like she wears hers or straight like corporate america would like to see it does not mean that she has a right to insult me. She said she was was sorry and just kidding with me and did not mean to hurt my feelings. I told her I did not appreciate those comments.

It's difficult when people are used to you wearing your hair straight (wrap style) or in a roller set and when you begin to wear natural styles they have negative things to say about it.

Re: New transies thread, say no to chemicals in 20

This is my 5th month in transition and I'm not sure if its growing faster, but I feel that without the chemicals I have better control over the state of my hair.

Re: New transies thread, say no to chemicals in 20

I'm in. My last touchup was in August 03. Ang yeah, the new growth is challenge. Right now I'm struggling with protective styles that also look professional. Working in DC, you have to present the right image. And I've been so lazy lately! For the past 3 weeks my new growth hasn't wanted to cooperate with the rest of my head.

What church do you go to that people will say stuff like that to you. Next time you tell the that church is for praising the Lord and not showing off your new "do" and if that doesn't work tell those ladies that you are going to pray that the Lord provides them with the insight to realize that their comments can hurt.

Re: New transies thread, say no to chemicals in 20

Lengthwanted and BEE,

Hey girls...welcome to my world. Except as a long time naturalhead, I have been hearing such comments forever. Congrats on your no chemicals journey.

Re: New transies thread, say no to chemicals in 20

Yay!! More transitioners!! I am so happy!!!

My last relaxer was March 15, 2003 so I am almost at 9 months with no chemicals!! Unfortunately I do have a breakage issue from that relaxer so it is not just free-sailing for me. Still, I have learned SO much about my hair since I officially began transitioning (June, 2003) and I am so in love with natural hair! I cannot wait to only have my natural hair to deal with!

Congrats, Lulu!

Walgreens tried to deliver my SURGE today, but I missed them . I plan to use it on my edges, where thinness seems to rule. I am so proud of you transitioners and recent naturals!!!! WAY TO GO!!! YOU GUYS ARE GREAT!!!

Re: New transies thread, say no to chemicals in 20

So I know this has been asked like a thousand times, but some of you experienced transitioners, what were your "must haves" during the different stages ie: 1-3 inches new growth, 4-6 inches...I'm sure the products change.

Re: New transies thread, say no to chemicals in 20

Okay, I've been a "natural" for all my life, but I recently went even more natural as far as only pressing my hair about once every couple months, if that. The rest of the time I wash, condition, and wear twist-outs, braid-outs, or up-dos.

I have always loved my "big" hair, but many folks (especially family) seem to love to make their little comments. Keep in mind this is often from people with weak, damaged, overprocessed hair. But yet they want to give me tips!!

Anyway, I love my natural hair and wouldn't have it any other way. So I just wanted to encourage you not to let the negative vibe merchants get you down. Go on with y'all bad selves!

Re: New transies thread, say no to chemicals in 20

Thanks, but I have been natural for 3+ years now

Just wanted to wish the newbies luck

Re: New transies thread, say no to chemicals in 20

hey everybody!!! i'm new to this board and am to transitioning..i haven't had a perm since may 2003. i'm going through the breakage probs also but i've been using a protein treatment to help out...i just had one question...what is Surge?

Re: New transies thread, say no to chemicals in 20

Welcome to the board, Shayla.

Surge Hair Revitalizer Plus 14 is a leave-in spray containing Biotin, Keratin Protein, Aloe Vera and Muccopolysaccharides. (See www.surgehaircare.com) It claims to boost hair growth rate within 14 days. It also claims to reduce breakage and stop split ends. You can get it at Walgreens. Their online store sales it as well. I have been using it for about a month now and am loving the results.

Re: New transies thread, say no to chemicals in 20

thanks alot for the quick response...is it expensive...do you spray it on everyday?..what results have you seen with using the product for the past month?

I paid about 5.99 per bottle (12 ozs.) I spray every evening on the scalp and then seal with oil. (It can also be used as a leave-in spray for your hair and a detangler, but since I protein condition regularly, I personnally am thinking this might be too much protein for my hair. But other ladies have not had a problem doing this.)

I have noticed hardly any breakage. My hair is much stronger as well. I used to just touch my wet hair and it would break. Not any more. Many of the ladies who have posted about Surge state they are experiencing much stronger hair. Also, my last relaxer was about 4 weeks ago. I now have the amount of new growth I normally see in about 6 weeks, so something is happening with my growth rate, and I like that
