cosmic sans Hi all. I was very hesitant about posting because I no longer had long hair and I thought this forum was for those who already had long hair. After reading post after post, I have become comfortable with my fellow hair growers. I lost my hair after a very bad perm. My hair was close to shoulder lenght and it took forever to get there since my hair grows so slowly. I moved from NY to SC and that's where my luck turned bad. I stopped crying now..lol..and I'm working on getting my hair back how I had it. Right now it's about 3 inches in length and the back is tapered. How can I grow out my own hair without being a slave to a salon. Thank you all.

Hi Shay!

I moved from Atlanta to Columbia, SC and I had to laugh at that!

I've had my share of hair drama, too.

Welcome, Shay!

I am so sorry for your bad experience with the relaxer. A lot of people here have had the same. I am glad that you are starting anew!

I think if you browse a bit, you will see that many of us here do not visit a salon at all or very infrequently for basic hair care needs. I know that many would be glad to provide suggestions and tips. Also, remember the Search feature at the top of the page to get yourself started for anything which might interest you.

Cheers,

Jade

Welcome to the board, Shay!

I am also in the process of growing out a short tapered cut as well so you are not alone. There are several ladies here also that have grown out short tapered cuts that now have long hair. Take a look at this. It helps me out from time to time and really keeps me motivated. I hope it will do the same for you. If you need a hair buddy, just PM me! I'm on the lookout for a hair buddy.

Hey Shay,

We're glad to have you. Your hair will grow back in no time and especially with the great tips and advice from this board.

Hi, and welcome! You'll find some great tips and help here. You be at shoulder length before you know it.

I read what you suggested Jen and boy do i feel better. My only question is, with my hair so short, I don't have any styles that don't require using a curling iron. I'm trying to avoid heat but my hair won't hold a curl for longer than a day. So tomorrow, I'll be curling again. Any suggestions?

You will learn a lot here and your hair will be where you want in no time.

Is your hair 11 inches currently, I'm kind of confused by this:

Type 4A/B, Relaxed
Len: 11 in/2in/11in
Meas: from scalp to ends

Because with 11 inches of hair you can do a lot...

Check out Adrienne's pics she grew out a short cut as well as other ladies here. You can also send her a PM (private message) I believed she used her curling iron a lot when her hair was short.

Happy hair growing.

Shay,
I just realized that I had to sacrifice some style for health. I started washing my hair 2x a week and flatironing only 2x a week right after my hair was washed and conditioned. I would wrap it with a satin head wrap around the sides so they laid down, in the morning I was just able to slightly comb or finger comb my hair down and I still had some curls in the top. I wouldn't recommend using heat on your hair 2x a week, but if you're curling everyday, this is a good improvement if you can't quit cold turkey. I also made sure I used lots of heat protection before I flatironed, like as a leave-in I used New Image Damage Free Leave-In which contains an ingredient called Phytantriol that is known to be a heat protectant. You may be able to find this at Sallys, but it's discontinued so they may not have anymore. Also, the Clairol 5x Leave-In contains phytantriol. Once the hair once dry I would then use Profectiv Healthy Ends...it's nice and thick and IMHO a good heat buffer...thirdly, I made sure I put the flat iron around a cool towel to get rid of any "sizzles" before letting it touch my hair. I don't recommend this regimen, but this is just what I did to ease away from my everyday curling iron habit.

The added moisture by washing 2x a week was really helpful and I found that when my hair was moisturized, it holds curls much, much better. Make sure you use a good daily moisturizer. I really, really recommend jojoba oil. I wouldn't give my jojoba up for the world. It's really light and leaves a nice sheen to the hair.

Now my hair is long enough to do braid outs so I'm experimenting with those, but when I first joined this board I was in the same boat as you, so I understand where you are coming from. I don't recommend heat, but I'm just being honest about what worked for me.

I'm working on being totally heat free, but I had to start somewhere...my hair is growing well now and most importantly not breaking, but I know over time the heat will most likely thin my hair out if used regularly.

My next endeavor is braids...and the phonytail. I've tried the drawstring ones, but I'm still looking for one that doesn't look too big for my little head. LOL!

HTH, if you have more questions please feel free to PM me anytime. Sorry for being so long winded.

Oh no, my hair is not 11 inches anymore. I had a perm put in it when I relocated and so much had fell out and the rest was so damaged, I had to start over again. Right now my hair is about 2 inches and tapered in the back.
