Has anyone heard of this new method for straightining hair its from japan. Its a type of flat iron that permantly straghtens hair. Does anyone know what its called?

I've heard about this process also. It's generally called "thermal reconditioning". Type that in your search engine and you should get a lot of hits.

From what I understand, Carmella, it is definitely NOT for African American Hair! /images/graemlins/frown.gif

Hey, I saw the thermal reconditioning method on Oprah, and they said it was not for African American hair...it sounded a little scary to me, so maybe that is a good thing for us?!

My understanding is that there are 2 reasons they don’t recommend TR for AA hair.
1. Most of us already relax our hair with Lye or no-lye and they say TR and relaxers don’t mix. They also say processed AA hair is too weak.
2. If you’re a natural, they are afraid that the chemical is not strong enough to straighten the hair.
Now, how they would think that a cream along with hot heat being applied would not straighten the hair is beyond me. I visited one board and someone said they must think we have brillo growing out of our heads. I thought that was funny.
Those are some of the reasons that I’ve read about.

the thing that seems beyond weird to me is that everything following this method is no different than a regular relaxer. you have to get it retouched just like a regular relaxer i mean there is no way you can change the way your hair grows out of your hair. plus you will have to pay the same price for the method to be done over again. in my eyes it is not worth it. at least with a relaxer if they mess up you will be out a hundred dollars tops for the high end salons where as with this method its 600 dollars in some spots. My Mom (who's African American) uses this method to straighten her hair. I asked about it and she said that it would not straighten my thick, coarse hair and it cannot be used if your hair has been previously relaxed, permed or color treated. My Mom also mentioned that it is a procedure that is only redone every 4-6 mos. So if you have natural hair and can control your new growth in that time period it could possibly work for you. BTW, its also very costly, could be from $500-$1000 for initial treatment and half the cost for the retouch. Also, my Mom's hair looks straighter than any relaxer I've ever had, it's probably too straight for some folks.

Her hair is extremely shiny and silky without having to add gloss or additional products. She uses a lot less stuff than I do to straighten and condition. lala - so you are saying that this method is less damaging than a relaxer? I thought that it was just as damaging (or more) than a relaxer because of the chemicals and heat.

That's what my Mom is reporting. She said her hair was softer and shinier. It's supposed to be less drying and damaging than relaxers. She said that the bleach and blowdrying are not issues with this method. You can't have bleach on your hair prior to the treatment. It sounds intriguing, but again, with the retouch being anywhere from 4-6 months, you hair would have grown a great deal by then.
