Hi ladies:

I'm not exactly new because I have been lurking for quite a while, but I thought that I would send out this message because I have a new album that I plan on adding lots of pictures to. I have been loced since Jan 04. I decide to take my latched locs out in Aug 05 and I am now a day or three from having all my loose hair again. I am really going to need all the help I can receive to get my hair in tip top shape, especially the ends. I appreciate all the advice I know you ladies will be sharing and I hope to give as much help to you all as I can also. So check out my album and let me know what you think. Also, I would like to know what you guys think I should do once I have all the locs out. This is what I have planned.

1. Deep condition dry hair with a mixture of olive oil and conditioner.
2. Shampoo
3. Protein conditioner
4. Leave in moisturizer
5. Twists
Do you think I should apply some extra moisturizer (vaseline, olive oil) to the ends (maybe similiar to the baggie method). My ends need to be trimmed and are somewhat dry and I want to jump right into fighting to keep my ends strong.

thanks;)

Yours locs were really pretty. I hope you enjoy having your hair loose again. I'm still a new natural so I don't have much advice but I wish you the best and I look forward to your updates:).

I've had some experience with undoing locs and yes DEEP conditioning is in order after you're done.

Since your locs were latched and pretty young, you likely don't quite as much dead hair. I clarified locs AS I was unlocing. You might want to do a good ACV rinse once everything is unloced and then do a deep treatment. However, it's been my experience that the hair that is left once your locs are removed is pretty healthy. You might want to trim a 1/4 inch or so just to be proactive. You can always inspect your locs first.

I wouldn't go the vaseline route. I can't tell the length of your hair, but it doesn't quite look like you can pull it all into a bun. So you'd end up having vaseline all over as opposed to just the ends (which I think is the purpose of the baggie method...end protection. I don't do it so not sure on that.)

IMO

1. ACV rinse to clarify/shampoo.
2. Deep condition
3. Leave in mousterizer
4. Coconut oil as leave in

OR
Bump 3 and 4 and use a shea based product like HHB, Whipped Pudding, or Asha's Mane Attraction/Shea What? etc. to thickly coat your hair as you two strand twist.

I don't know about latched hair, but unloced hair that was palmrolled tends to "want" to reloc. So just keep an eye on it. My sister was loced for 10 years. She's about halfway through her hair. Her locs are about waistlength so the ones in the front still cover the back...no problem. She keeps the unloced hair two strand twisted or plaited. She's taking her time just like you. She undoes one a day unless she's busy. She only uses water and goes from the end to the roots. She keeps the unloced hair moisturized and oiled.

NIkkipoo: I really don't know the answer to that right now. I went through a period when I thought I was done with relaxers, but now (especially since coming to this board and seeing all the gorgeous hair) I am starting to feel the tug to relax. I think that I will be natural for a while and see how it changes as it grows and get use to taking care of loose natural hair again.

Hopeful: Thanks for the compliment.

Patient1: Thanks for the info. I am acutally waiting for my first ever  order of Oyin Whipped and I am so excited. I hope that it turns out to be as good as they say. I've been using some olive oil moisturizer on the ends that I have taken down and I used some vaseline on a section of my damp hair last night after I twisted it and then put it in a bantu knot. It does really work and I can't wait until my hair is long enough to do this without the grease ending up everywhere.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
