I can't get to a salon, and I'm stuck having to do it myself. I'm wondering if I should do it flat iron it today or wait until the day of the event. What would you suggest?

Hi MissJ,
I don't flat iron my hair at all. I just do rollersets which is actually safer I think, especially while transistioning because the hair is already set to break, so I don't want to give it a reason to break by putting direct heat on my hair.

It's funny that this question came up. I flat ironed my hair yesterday and my roots are waving up in some areas today. Mind you, I did low heat so it wasn't a hard press and the only thing I put on my hair was the heat protectant.

Eek, I hope I don't look jacked up for the ball. I feel like I should try to flat iron it now, because I need the practice. Then again, I don't want it to revert before I get to my destination.

JCoily, what kind of flat iron did you use?

For my hair it works so much better when I wash it a few day before so that I can pin curl it to really let my style set and to really let the oil soak in to relax my hair over a few days.

My hair looks so much better and hold up better than trying to wash and wear it out that day. I tried this once before and it got rather puffy toward the end of the day.

I have only straigthen my hair out a few times since being natural but I will continue to do it the night before or even a few days so that I can pincurl it to hold my curls better the next day.

I will update my album soon and you will see how well my hair held up going into week two.

I really think it depends upon your hair. I'm not sure I could get mine straight enough with a rollerset. I have a lot of 4a/b. The lady that did my hair...did a blowdry and flat iron. It lasted about a week without any extra stuff added. Why don't you go with a braidout/twistout updo? Then you don't have to worry about the heat and you can have pretty wavy hair. As I remember your hair is rather long, right?

ThursdayGirl, I don't think I'm could do a braid out or twist out and make it look decent. I'm stylistically challenged.

sunnygirl, what's the password? I tried May 2005, but it didn't work. :(

I have had my hair flat ironed twice and it got very straight. It lasted maybe 4 days...I am all natural 4b if that helps. It looked it's best the first day and then starts to revert by day 3.

It depends on the weather and how well I care for it. I flatironed my hair on Monday afternoon and it has not reverted at all. My hair always looks best about the third day after flatironing, when the flyaways have settled down without the use of any further product.
