Naturals - How and When do you detangle?

When I do twists on wet hair (once every 4-5 weeks), this is my detangling routine:

Usually starting with an old twistout, I fingercomb my hair and separate into about 7 sections. I do this the night before, since it takes a while. I put the sections into fat twists, which I then put into two buns to avoid tangling while sleeping.

The next day, after washing and conditioning each of the sections, I only comb the section I am about to twist after applying my leave in and EVOO.

I mostly detangle with con in the shower but occasionally I do it on dry hair with a leave in like shea moisture. Today I did with a little bit of that and dabur vatika oil and it was fine. None of my hair came out with the comb.

I detangle with my fingers in the shower with conditioner on. Then once again while it is still wet with usually with no products and sometimes with a leave in. Q

I detangle on dry hair with a comb and I always wash and deep condition in braids(with no extensions) or plats.
Washing in braids has reduced breakage tremendously.

Pokahontas,

What kind of detangler do you use? Do you use this in addition to your regular conditioner? Is it is easier to wet it down with water first or do you go straight to to the detangler?

I use this cheapie kids detangler called Breck. I got it from the dollar store and the only reason I use it is just to use it up. I think wetting it down with water and then applying a product with slip would work just the same. I suggest Africa's Best liquid hair mayo. The key is using something that is very slippery. I did a thread awhile back on detangling before shampooing. I'll see if I can find it and bump it up.

Only once a week in the shower with a detangler comb and lots of conditioner in my hair. My curls always come out so nice after I do it this way too.

i think i just found my best/most effective detangling method.

before washing, in sections using conditioner

tried it last night.

what i did was detangled in small sections loaded w/ conditioner
first with a large tooth comb, then carefully with a small tooth comb
to make sure i got all of the kinks/knots out
then i'd twist each section so that they'd stay untangled.

i washed and deep conditioned w/ the twists still in

i'm usually too lazy to be that careful about detangling
but i think this method will be a staple in my regimen
from now on.

HERE'S TO LOSING LESS HAIR!!

Two ways.

In shower wet hair with conditioner or oil

If I am twisting or braiding and it is drying then I use something to moisten my hair and possibly a little bit of oil.

I detangle mine after washing, and conditioning, I put my glycerin almond oil liberally, I get my afro pick and I pick my hair out, i have very very very minimal hairs left behind.

it depends on how tangled it is. if it's super tangly then i will soak it in conditioner (usually on wet hair) and detangle in sections PRIOR to washing. but sometimes if it's not or i'm being lazy, i will shampoo and then add my deep conditioner and comb it through and let it sit.

i take a section, slather the conditioner on, comb through from ends to root w/ a wide-tooth comb and then i take a paddle brush on that same section of hair and comb from roots to ends to smooth it out and make sure all the shed hair is out.

wet, either with a shampoo that has enough slip, or any conditioner. start from ends up with a shower comb.

I have been suffering from shedding and breakage for far too long and would like know how you all are detaingling your hair - just in case i'm doing something wrong.

let me tell you, friend! I'm also a 3C and i've really been there with the shedding- shoot I would NOT be doing as good as I was doing hair-wise were it not for doing regular old box braids. I do this usually on Sunday, using thick pomade and leave them in until Tuesday or Wednesday usually in a small chignon. It cuts down SO MUCH on shedding and breakage- shoot I can even sleep without a scarf although I do sleep on a silk pillow at night (which doesn't always work because i'm a crazy sleeper)....I find now that once I take out the hair not only is it moisturized but it sheds less than ever before (even when compared to bunning- for some reason I guess because its low manipulation and theres plenty of moisture-- also ironic because your hair sheds more the longer its not combed), my hair responds positively to it which is EXCELLENT and the days after I take my hair out of braids (especially the day after) my hair has no detangling problems and no extra shedding!

TRY IT OUT NOW! lol especially with the cold season coming to greet us! HTH!! Let me know i it works for you also.....

PS: I find that detangling in the shower doesn't work for me anymore- in fact, i've been doing that the whole time i've been natural and I see that hair is needlessly shed. I actually do it on wet hair once i'm out of the shower with a little leave-in.... I think its better and I find if I use a good leave-in (any of Oyin's brand) I can get away without having the extra slippery conditioners. I find the hair only really needs 2-3 good combings a week to keep detangled and manageable. I find any more than that is definitely excessive.... and trust, I was a DEVOUT wash everyday and comb everyday fiend up until a couple of weeks ago (i'm talking for 10 years at least)

After detangling,
What do some of you do with your hair to keep it from tangling back up...style wise.
Do you braid it in the shower...etc?
Thanks
