Do people get EXTRA excited when you wear your hair straight? I flat-ironed my hair last night and wore it straight today and the people in my office were acting a dang fool. I mean I had someone shake my hand, someone even gave me a hug cause he was happy I "did my hair." These folks in this office are crazy!!!!! /images/graemlins/spinning.gif

I wear short wigs and weaves all the time (and my natural hair sometimes but to a lesser degree) and they've told me a million times they can't wait to see my hair. Just didn't know they would be this excited. I'm not offended though. They just like my hair better this way.

Yeah, I've gotten responses like that. It's a little irritating when people (usually non-black) are like "Ohhh, your hair looks really good LIKE THAT..." I'm thinking "So what are you trying to say?"....I just say thanks and brush my shoulders off...haha

I've noticed that a lot of people prefer straight hair. But I have gotten a lot of compliments with my twist outs.

When I wore my hair straight in July, I didn't get a lot of compliments. My friend said my hair looked like a weave. But if I wear my hair in a braid out or in a pony puff, then everyone starts telling me how they like my hair.

Po' thangs. They don't know any better. I probably would have been mad for a minute and then said, "Oh well, they just like my hair better when it straight. The better enjoy it while they can..."

I havent worn my hair str8 yet...its too short. I get probing questions all the time asking when Im going to straighten it, how long is it straigtened blah blah blah. I wont be straightening my hair for another 2-3 years so um they're going to have to wait.

I would have been kind of offended if they said that to me. Okay does curly hair = undone/messy hair? It seems like thats what they were implying.

thats funny and somewhat sad at the same time some people are just too much.

I get a lot of comments with my hair texture being the way it is (wonderfully nappy) from my black co-workers who ask me how I got my hair "that way". I always find comments like these amusing. I've heard it all, someone at my school even told me my hair was "almost good". ******shaking my head*****

The truth of the matter is that there are some people who are obsessed with straight hair (and they can't stand nappy/coily/textured hair) Then their are those who are obsessed with there nappy hair and hate the idea of having straight hair. I guess I can somewhat undestand the later obsession because people are just glad with the hair God gave em But I guess obsession is obsession, the definition is the same. Some people like weaves some don't. Such is life. I think there are a lot of black folks who are not educated on their own hair texture. If we were educated it might not be such a big deal to see a girl rock a 12 inch afro. On the other hand if we wern't so anti-straight it wouldn't be a big deal to see that same girl rock a press. The key is education and finding out about whats healthy for your hair and what is not.

Unfortunately, there is still a stigma associated with being a nappy head. My mother would be soooo happy to see me with straight hair-not just because she likes straight hair but I think she is obsessed with it and hates her and my own texture. I used to be that way, I guess we live and learn.

The only reason why I don't think (this time) that they were implying that was because I wear straight wigs all the time.

Good point, but why the hugs and handshakes? Heck, they might as well have started passing out cigars and taking the day off work because RealLuv took off her wig! People are so funny! I would not be that offended either (because it isn't worth the energy) but I certainly would have been taken aback by all the congrats and hugging and such! You would think you just had a baby and not just flatironed your hair!!! LOL!!!

In my experience the black people I know prefer my hair straight and the white people I know prefer my hair natural. yeah it's interesting... I think because people don't know about shrinkage they think I have short hair so when I went to work for the first time with straight hair my boss was up my ass all day. My "friend" saw my hair straight for the first time a few weeks ago and he damn near passed out... I pay them no mind lol

I had a similar experience a few years back. Came to work with my fresh press-n-curl and you think I walked in wearing a Lady Godiva wig! A couple folks wanted to check my scalp for tracks. "Oh, look at your hair. I had no idea. You should wear it out more often." Um, you don't have to deal with this bush, I do. I was back in braids by the weekend.
