Naturals and ponytails

I am new to this site and this is my first post, but I have a little advice. I was natural up until a month ago (texlaxed now:) ). What I would do is take the top half of my hair while wet and apply my leave on conditioner, Aveda Elixer, and smooth with my boar bristle brush and hold firmly in hand and apply ponytail holder once the hair was postioned the way I wanted it. I would then smooth the bottom half with the same method and gather that hair to meet the top half of hair using another ponytail holder to secure it. I then applied some oil to the hair, I used castor oil because it creates some waves and apply my satin scarf for about 20 minutes. I never had any lumps using this method. Always smooth. HTH

I do the same thing.

I also style in a pony puff only when wet/damp (after using a micro fiber towel to absorb a lot of the water). I apply my leave ins, and gel on the top of the hair, and gently brush to smooth. I then use my hands to further smooth and gather the hair back taught and use a ouchless ponytail holder to secure.

I can't make a real ponytail yet, but I can make a decent pony puff. I usually do it while the hair is damp and productless. I detangle in an upwards motion, spray a leave in homemade spritz, put a brasrtap head band on and let it make the puff on the natural contour of my head. I smooth a bit of gel over the edges, from the palm of my hands.

I almost never make a ponytail by gathering the hair and then putting on the holder. I always double a headband around my neck and slide it back over my head (after I've used my hands to get my hair going in the right direction and smoothed the outer layer with a boar bristle brush). My hair has to be damp when I do this.
Some days I just wear it like a headband, and some days I'll push it all the way back until it's actually making a ponytail.

Thats wierd.... Leave ins usually work well. Try some fantasia gel and a scarf. I have some of the thickest hair Ive seen (the kind when you can only put the ponytail holder on once ) and Ive also noticed some lumps sometimes (My hair tends to wave up and fight against ponytails) but it always falls to Fantasia IC gel w/ sparkelites.

ditto to lenght4me! I just made my first low puff today(I will post pics tonite). Anywho I noticed that if I detangled my hair to the roots it was easy to put my hair into a low pony. I think that was the key:) I used the shower method that was suggested on the board and the detangling to the roots work like a charm.

I use an ouchless headband (the thin ones). First, I double it on my wrist. Then I wrap the doubled headband around my pontail twice. So the headband has really been wrapped around 4 times. It gives me a snug ponytail but not too tight.

i can only get a flat ponytail by styling while hair is wet.

also using a scarf instead of a ponytail holder is easier because rather than stuffing your hair into a ponytail holder, with a nice decorative scarf you can wrap it around the base several times and manipulate the tension better.

Babyblue your hair is amazing. It is so beautiful. I am in awe. :) It took my breathe away really. Proceed ladies.

Yeah that's a version of what I do!

I can only put my hair in a ponytail when it is soaked in the shower. I detangle my hair in the way I want to comb my hair for my ponytail so I don't have a hard time trying to gather it later. While the water is running on my hair I grab it in and put the holder on it. While in the shower I put my gel on it fast. When I get out I brush the edges how I want them then I tye a scarf on until I get ready to leave. It always come out smooth without any bump on top of my head.

Interesting. Great thead. :yep:

Slight hijack:

About how many inches of hair does it take to form a pony puff? I'm concerned mine will look like a turd. :(

lol Hijacks are welcome. I honestly don't know how long my hair is because I never measured it and I don't plan on it. I just found out by accident one day in the shower. I was wringing the water out and I realized that my hair was still in my hand. LOL.
