I have the same problem with my and my dd1's hair. I use bands (soaked in olive oil) on the roots to keep them from unraveling:

Don't flame me -I know it's not as good for the hair but if I want to have twists that last, it's the only thing that works. And really, this is why I rarely wear twists. Most of the time, I just use the twists for styling a twist out and don't wear the twists alone.

 I won't. I used to use rubber bands soaked in oil for my flat twists. Her twists are very beautiful.

I agree that it might be the product that you are using, but another suggestion might be to try 3-strand twist. I have a lot of kink so I have no problem with 2-strand, but my hair is thick, so if I make my twists too big they always unravel, so whenever I want bigger twists that will hold I always do 3-strand. My daughter is a 4a, but her twists can unravel especially if I do them on hair that is dry or not damp enough, but when I put the 3-strand in, they don't unravel. Just a thought.
